Abstract
234,978. Auster, Ltd., Lane, P., and Lait, A. E. May 15, 1924. Windscreens, particularly intended for the rear seats of motor vehicles, of the kind which are carried by means of folding-arms or like extensible supports attached to the rear of the front seats so as to be adjustable towards or away from the occupants of the rear seats and which are also adapted to be moved downwardly to an outof-use position by a vertical sliding movement are provided with springs to assist in raising the screen to its operative position and to take the weight of the screen during the lowering thereof. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 5, the main-screen 4 is supported on folding-arms 1, 2 as described in Specification 2898/09, and is provided at each vertical edge with channel-shaped bars 7 which are guided in vertical sleeves 11 carried by the supporting-arms 2. Wing-screws 28 engaging slots at the lower ends of the bars 7 serve to retain the screen 4 in its raised position. In order to allow the screen to be folded down to an horizontal position for use as a table, the sleeves 11 are pivotally mounted on fittings 15 at the ends of a tubular member 14 disposed between the arms 2. The tension spring 29 for assisting in raising the screen to its upper position is located in the tube 14 and is connected by means of a cord 31 passing round pulleys 33, 35 to the lower ends of the bars 7, and, in the lower position of the screen, the cord is disposed within the channel portions of the bars. Modifications are described in which the springs are arranged within or around the bars 7 or inside telescopic tubular members pivoted at one end to a fixed support and at the other end to the bottom of the bars 7. In a further modification, Fig. 16, the screen, instead of moving relative to the supporting-arms 1, 2, moves with these arms, the arms 1 for this purpose being connected to sleeves 52 slidable downwards on standards 53 against the action of springs 54 located in the standards.
