Abstract

A synthetic material is made up of a synthetic substance, such as a plastic, and an admixed fibre material which is preferably a regrowable raw material such as hemp, flax or miscanthus or a combination of these materials. The synthetic substance and the fibre material may be different colours and the fibre material is preferably coloured before admixture with the synthetic. The synthetic material is particularly suited to the manufacture of vehicle trim components having a simulated textile surface.

Description

SYNTHETIC MATERIAL The present invention relates to a synthetic material. in the manufacture of synthetic material parts, especially for the automobile industry, there is increasing demand for materials which offer a high-quality surface impression. For specific cases of use, parts of that kind are provided at their surface with different textiles, artificial leather or even real leather. In other embodiments, artificial or mineral fibres of short length are admixed to the synthetic and, in the case of certain colour combinations, convey, together with the carrier material, the impression of a textile-like surface.
This technique, however, has the disadvantage that fibres of that kind are difficult to introduce into a molten synthetic mass, whether because incompatibilities with the synthetic material are present or because too strong an orientation of the fibres arises due to the melt flow. An orientation of the fibres in a specific direction is unfavourable, as this leads to a significant usua ! detraction.
There is therefore a need for a synthetic material by which the stated disadvantages may be at least partly overcome and which may provide an improved surface impression.
According to the present invention there is provided a synthetic material comprising a synthetic substance, such as a plastic material, and a content of admixed fibre material, which is made partly or exclusively from renewable or regeneratable resource or raw material.
Fibre materials of that kind are usually compatible with the common synthetics or plastics and have the capability of being diversely coloured.
Preferably, the fibre material has a length of substantially 0.5 to 5 millimetres and is obtained from, particularly, hemp, flax and/or miscanthus. Alternatively, the material can comprises scrapings or parings of natural fibre plants.
For preference, the content of the admixed fibre material is substantially 5 to 50 weight percent, wherein a mixture of different fibre materials is also possible, i. e. not only a mixture of different natural fibre materials, but aiso a mixture of artificial or mineral fibres with natural fibres.
In addition, the synthetic and the fibre material can have different colours. For example, in order to distinguish the fibre material from the synthetic, a colour contrast or brightness contrast between the two materials can be selected, for example, a grey coloured synthetic and dark fibres of the fibre material. in particular, the fibre material can have a colour contrast relative to the colour of the synthetic.
The fibre material can be coloured prior to admixture with the synthetic, for example stained.
According to a further aspect of the present invention there is provided a part or article made from a synthetic material according to the invention.
In a preferred embodiment of the synthetic material, a fibre material composed of fibres of 0.5 to 5.0 millimetres in length and obtained at least in part from an organic raw product, in particular particles of a plant such as flax, hemp or miscanthus with a fibrous structure of at least a component of the plant, is admixed to a synthetic substance, such as a plastics material, in molten state, the resulting synthetic material having a 5 to 50 weight percent content of the fibre material. The synthetic material can be used for articles such as, for example, vehicle trim parts intended to have a simulated textile surface, the articles being produced, such as by moulding, at the same time as formulation of the synthetic material or subsequently. The colour of the fibres of the fibre material can be selected to be different from that of the synthetic substance so that the fibres are visually distinguishable from the embedding synthetic substance.

Claims (11)

  1. CLAIMS 1. A synthetic material comprising a synthetic and an admixed fibre material made from regrowable raw material.
  2. 2. A synthetic material according to claim 1, wherein the fibre material comprises at least one of hemp, flax and miscanthus.
  3. 3. A synthetic material according to claim 1, wherein the fibre materai comprises scrapings or parings of at least one natural fibre plant.
  4. 4. A synthetic material according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the fibre material has a fibre length of substantially 0.5 to 5 millimetres.
  5. 5. A synthetic material according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the content of the admixed fibre material is substantially 5 to 50 percent by weight.
  6. 6. A synthetic material according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the fibre material comprises a mixture of different raw materials.
  7. 7. A synthetic material according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the synthetic and the fibre material have different colours.
  8. 8. A synthetic material according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the fibre material is coloured prior to admixture with the synthetic.
  9. 9. A synthetic material according to one of the preceding claims, wherein the fibre material has a colour contrast relative to the synthetic.
  10. 10. A synthetic material substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
  11. 11. An article made from a synthetic material according to any one of the preceding claims.
