Abstract
A flood barrier for residential and commercial doors comprises a permanently fixed non-ferrous metal frame 1, 2, and a durable and lightweight board 3. The base channel 2 is preferably recessed in the step/threshold and has a protective cover for when the barrier is not in use. The board has a waterproof seal 4 and may be held in place by lugs 5 and bolts 6.
Description
BARRIER TO PREVENT INGRESS OF FLOOD WATERS
This invention relates to a flood barrier for the use on standard external doors to residential and commercial premises, both existing and new.
As is well known the normal practice for protecting property against flooding is sandbags and or wooden boards placed against external doors. This system has proved to be inefficient in preventing the ingress of floodwaters and is beyond the physical means of the elderly or frail.
This invention provides for a permanently fixed non-ferrous metal frame, comprising angle sides and base channel, to the exterior of the property and an extremely durable but lightweight removable board incorporating a waterproof seal to the inside face.
When in use the board is locked into position with two locating lugs at the base and two metal bolts at the top. When the board is removed a metal cover is provided to protect the base channel.
Specific uses of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings which :
Fig 1. Shows a plan of the barrier in use with a recessed door and frame.
Fig 2. Shows a plan of the barrier in use with a flush door and frame.
Fig 3. Shows a plan of the barrier in use with a projecting door and frame.
Fig 4. Shows a typical section with board in place.
Fig 5. Shows a typical section with board removed.
With reference to the drawings, the barrier comprises anodised aluminium side angles
I (45mm x 45mm x 3mm) fixed on a mastic bed to the property structure externally.
An anodised aluminium base channel 2 (45mm x 25mm x 3mm) recessed and fixed to step/threshold of the property. To this frame is fitted a removable board comprising rigid uPVC sandwiching reinforced Styrofoam 3 (900mm high x 28mm) complet with a self-correcting waterproof seal 4 to the internal face. The board is positioned by 2 No uPVC locating lugs 5 to the external base and locked into position by 2 No aluminium bolts 6 to the top internally. The lugs 5 and bolts 6 drive the seal 4 onto the frame 1 & 2.
When the board is not in position the base channel 2 is protected by an anodised aluminium cover channel 7.
All component parts of the barrier are waterproof and the board can be fitted very speedily. Being lightweight it can be managed by the elderly or frail.
Claims (3)

- 2. A flood barrier as claimed in claim 1 incorporating a self-correcting waterproof seal to the removable board.
- 3. A flood barrier as claimed in claim 1 wherein a protective cover is provided to the base channel whilst the board is removed.
