234,590. Claff, A. April 7, 1924. Wood and like wind instruments.-Reed instruments, such as saxophones. clarinets, and oboes, are made telescopic to produce their notes by variations in length of the body. In Fig. 1, the innermost part 1 carrying a saxophone mouthpiece 3 is rigidly connected at 17 to the bell 16, the other elements sliding on or within these parts by means of guides 7 and packing 6 as the U-piece is drawn outwards or inwards by a finger-piece 22 or the like. The U-piece 11 is provided with an octave-hole 18, and the bell 16 may be provided with similar holes raising the pitch of the instrument one or more tones. The instrument may be suspended from the neck of the player by a. cord attached to a bracket 21. In Fig 3, the telescopic sections are arranged within a casing 36 carrying a bell 37 and are collapsed by a finger-piece (not shown) which is attached to the largest section 35 and projects through a slot in the casing. Holes 41 may be made in the casing to facilitate the emission of the notes or for ornament.
