Abstract
A process for the production of potassium carbonate of a desired degree of purity consists in treating a caustic potash solution with carbonic acid for such a length of time, which is greater or less according to the degree of purity desired, that only a part of the potassium hydroxide is converted into carbonate, leaving sufficient caustic potash in solution to retain the impurities contained in the original liquor. When a concentrated solution of potassium hydroxide of about 45 DEG B<\>ae. is employed, pure potassium carbonate is precipitated until about 40-50 per cent of the hydroxide has been converted into carbonate. The precipitated carbonate is separated at this point, beyond which, dissolution commences if the process is continued. Potassium carbonate of a lesser degree of purity may be obtained by continuing the process beyond the point at which dissolution of the precipitated potassium carbonate begins, and subsequently separating the carbonate by evaporation and cooling. The process may also be adapted to the purification of impure potassium carbonate by treating it with a caustic potash solution of about 45 DEG B<\>ae. and passing carbonic acid. The carbonic acid treatment is preferably carried out at a temperature of about 10-15 DEG C. in order to increase the yield.
