Abstract

A backlit vehicle number plate has a light source positioned behind a tinted diffuser panel and an outer opaque panel (2) with alphanumeric character cut-outs (1). Preferably, the diffuser panel is tinted black whilst the opaque panel is appropriately coloured for the position on the vehicle, eg red for the rear and blue, green, yellow, violet, white or orange for the front. The light source can be lamp(s) (4) with a reflector or an array of LEDs (3), which may be switched on with the vehicle sidelights.

Vehlcle Registration Plate Description Back-lit vehicle registration plate.
Background to invention To make vehicle registration plates more legible at night.
Problem it solves Front and rear vehicle registration plates at night and in fog are difficult to read from a distance for identification purposes such as CCTV cameras, speed cameras and Police.
What it does Backlights each individual letter and number on the vehicle registration plate to a brighter level for easier identification when sidelights are switched on.
A specific embodiment of the invention wdl now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings which ; Shows a pictorial view of a complete vehicle registration plate assembly.
Shows a view of the multilayered plate assembly.
Shows a view of the L. E. D illumination assembly.
Shows a view of the lamp and reflector assembly.

Claims (1)

  1. Claims A vehicle registration plate assembly which comprises; (a) A registration plate housing; and, within the housing, (b) A light source operable to provide a substantially evenly diffused light ; and, in front of said light source, (c) A body of sheet material having a rear laminar black tinted portion and forwardly of said black tinted portion a laminar portion which is opaque except in cut away regions representative of the vehicle registration; and in which, (d) The opaque front laminar portion is of a colour appropriate for the location on the vehicle at which the assembly is affixed Claim 2 A assembly (as claimed in claim 1) in which the diffused light source comprises a distribution of L. E. D's and between said diodes and said body of sheet of light diffusing material.
    Claim 3 A assembly (as claimed in claim 1) in which the diffused light source comprises a arrangement of lamps; to the rear of said lamp arrangement a light reflector between the lamp of said arrangement a sheet of light diffusing material.
    Claim 4 (L. E. D) A vehicle registration plate assembly substantially as here described with reference to fig 3 for the two cases.
    Claim 5 (Lamps) A vehicle registration plate assembly substantially as here described with reference to fig 4 for the two cases.
