Abstract

An end cap 6 (closed at one end) fits over the interengagement of a claw head 2 with a blade rubber 5. The end cap 6 has an opening 7 in the top wall to receive the upper portion of the claw head 2. The claws 3 are housed in an opening 9 formed in the lower wall of the end cap 6 and locate within grooves 4 formed in the sides of a wiper blade rubber 5. The lower face of the end cap 6 also incorporates an elongated slot 11 which is received within the grooves 4 in the blade rubber 5. Barbs 12 help to retain the end cap onto the blade rubber 5 so as to resist rearward displacement of the blade rubber 5 with respect of the end cap 6.

Description

"Improvements relating to Claw Head Retention on Wiper Blades" There can be a tendency for a wiper blade held by claws at the ends of parts of a wiper blade harness to slide laterally with respect to the harness and thus become detached from the claws.
According to the present invention there is provided an end cap for a wiper blade, the end cap being of generally Ushaped cross section, but with inturned flanges at the base to fit into grooves in a blade rubber, one end of the cap being open to receive the blade rubber with a strengthening vertebra and the other end being closed off to prevent the blade rubber and vertebra extending therethrough, the top wall and the flanges in the base defining two openings larger than the gap between the facing inner ends of the flanges, for receipt of claws on the claw head of a wiper harness designed to locate into said grooves in the blade rubber.
With such an arrangement, the claw at one end of a wiper harness can be located into the end cap prior to the insertion of the blade rubber. An identical end cap will be similarly located onto the other end of the blade rubber so as to captivate the claw at the other end of the wiper harness. When the wiper blade is pressed against a windscreen the ends of the wiper blade cannot readily be displaced from the end caps and the claws are held positively by the end caps.
In many types of wiper blade harness the claws are angled from the claw head. In this instance the opening in the top wall of the end cap would be displaced nearer to the open end of the end cap than to the other opening, for receipt of an angled claw head of a wiper harness.
Preferably the side walls of the end cap will then define internal ramps linking the two openings in the top wall and in the flanges.
It is preferred that the facing inner edges of the flanges should incorporate barbs to press into the body of the blade rubber. Advantageously the side walls of the end cap can bulge outwardly in the region between the two openings.
The invention may be performed in various ways and a preferred embodiment will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figures 1 and 2 are end perspective and vertical sections respectively through parts of a wiper blade harness incorporating an end cap of this invention; and Figures 3,4 and 5 are respectively top, underneath and underneath perspective views of the end cap shown in Figures 1 and 2.
A wiper blade harness 1 (as shown in Figures 1 and 2) terminates in a claw head 2 provided with claws 3 which locate within grooves 4 formed in the sides of a wiper blade rubber 5. An end cap 6 fits over the interengagement of the claw head 2 with the blade rubber 5. As shown in Figures 3 to 5 the end cap 6 has an opening 7 in the top wall to receive the upper portion of the claw head 2. The side arms 8 of the claw head angle forwardly to the position where the claws 3 project. The claws 3 are housed in an opening 9 formed in the lower wall of the end cap 6. This opening 9 is displaced forwardly with respect to the opening 7 in the upper face. Ramp walls 10 at the sides join the openings 7 and 9. The lower face also incorporates an elongated slot 11 which is received within the grooves 4 in the blade rubber 5. Barbs 12 help to retain the end cap onto the blade rubber 5 so as to resist rearward displacement of the blade rubber 5 with respect of the end cap 6.
For assembly purposes the claw head 2 is first located into the end cap 6. The groove 4 of the blade rubber 5 is then slid into the end cap so as to trap the claw head 2.
The other end of the blade rubber 5 is similarly connected to the other end of the blade harness 1 and, particularly when the blade assembly is mounted on to a vehicle windscreen, the blade rubber 5 is effectively prevented from sliding out of engagement with the two claw heads 2.

Claims (6)
