Abstract

A device for directing a user to a desired location in a building, comprising a user display 1 for presenting directional information to the desired location, a data entry means, eg keypad 2 by which the user may enter data specifying the desired location, a receiver for receiving location identifying signals from signal transmitters located about a building. Included are processor means for processing said data and location identifying signals to generate directional information for the user display, combined with a system for directing a user to a desired location in a building. The building has a plurality of signal transmitters located about the building for transmitting directional information.

Description

ROOM FINDER This invention relates to a room finder.
The object of this invention is to assist people in finding specific locations within large buildings.
The invention takes the form of a device for directing a user to a desired location in a building, comprising a user display for presenting directional information to the desired location, a data entry means by which the user may enter data specifying the desired location, a receiver for receiving location identifying signals from signal transmitters located about a building, and processor means for processing said data and location identifying signals to generate said directional information for the user display, combined with a system for directing a user to a desired location in a building, comprising a building with a plurality of signal transmitters located about the building, and a device as described.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one possible form which the device might take.
Referring to the drawing, the device is contained within a casing 6 which may be made of plastic or some other material. The user enters details of the location sought by means of the keypad 2. Directional information, transmitted to the device from signal transmitters located about the building, is displayed on the screen 1, in written and/or diagrammatic form. As the user moves through the building, such directional information is amended so as to remain appropriate to the user's position within the building. The device may be turned on and off by means of switches 4 and 5. It may include a receptacle for holding a key 3.

Claims (12)

  1. CLAIMS 1. A device for directing a user to a desired location in a building, comprising a user display for presenting directional information to the desired location, a data entry means by which the user may enter data specifying the desired location, a receiver for receiving location identifying signals frorr signal transmitters located about a building, and processor means for processing saic data and location identifying signals to generate said directional information for the user display.
  2. 2. A device as claimed in Claim 1, in which the data entry means is a keypad.
  3. 3. A device as claimed in Claim 1, in which the data entry means is a card reader.
  4. 4. A device as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the device has a receptacle for holding a room key.
  5. 5. A device as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the processor means has a non-volatile memory pre-programmed with data relating the location identifying signals to a desired location within the building.
  6. 6. A device as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the device has an audible alarm and the processor means can identify when the device is leaving the building wherein the audible alarm is sounded when the device is leaving the building.
  7. 7. A device as claimed in any preceding claim in which the device is hand-held.
  8. 8. A system for directing a user to a desired location in a building, comprising a building with a plurality of signal transmitters located about the building, and a device as claimed in any preceding claim.
  9. 9. A system as claimed in Claim 8, in which the signal transmitters are ultra-sonic transmitters.
  10. 10. A system as claimed in Claim 8, in which the signal transmitters are radio transmitters.
  11. 11. A system as claimed in Claim 8, in which the signal transmitters are infra-red transmitters.
  12. 12. A system as claimed in Claim 8, in which the signal transmitters use an energy form not specified in any preceding claim.
