Abstract

An example of the application would be the wheel of a motorcycle. A vehicle wheel alignment checking device which has a demountable light source (1), attached to an adjustable wheel (2) and mounted at 90 degrees to it's rotational axis, and transmitting a ray to a demountable graduated scales (3) attached to a reference wheel (4), also mounted at 90 degrees to it's rotational axis. In use this enables rapid and accurate setting/checking of the adjustable wheel to a desired position with relation to the reference wheel by alignment of the ray to the graduation scales (3) via adjusters (5).

Description

VEHICLE WHEEL ALIGNMENT CHECKING DEVICE For many years it has been know that a bicycle/motorcycle needs to have it's wheels in alignment to ensure correct handling cornering ability.
The methods used have been varied, but usually require either a length of string or metal vooden streight edge laid along both wheels and used as a guide. This technique proved satisfactory when both front and rear tyres were of a similar width/section.
Over recent years the trend has changed with the introduction of sports'race replica motorcycles having drastically different tyre profiles and widths i. e. front 120mm wide, rear 190mm wide. With these differences the old methods are of little use. Some manufactures took to appling marks to the frame to enable alignment. But these marks have been proven inaccurate and if used can adversly affect handling and stability of the motorcycle.
According to the present invention there is provided a vehicle wheel alignment device comprising a light source and graduated scale both with means of releasabh-securing to the relevant wheels of the vehicle at 90 degrees to their rotational axis. Use of the device enables rapid and accurate alignment of the vehic'e wheels, thereby improving safety and handling of the vehicle.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which : Figure I shows a motorcycle side view indicating the position of the light source (1) and graduated scale (3), mounted to wheels (2 & 4), with adjusters (5), and light ray (6).
Figure 2 shows a plan view of two light rays (6) transmitted from light sources (1) to graduated scales (3). fitted either side of wheels (2 & 4) and indicating an abonnent error as a light ray (6) and the true alignent position as broken line (7).

Claims (2)

  1. CLAIMS 1 Use of light sources for the rapid adjustment of vehicle wheel alignment of particularly a motorcycle in which the light sources are releasably secured to either side of preferably the rear wheel and pointing at releasably secured graduated scales affixed to the front wheel the process of checking alignment is simplified as the graduated scales would be illuminated and readable from the rear. The technician can make adjustments and measurements from the rear of the motocycle and as the location for the light source will be at the intersection of the rim and the tyre negating tyre runout this will achieve accurate alignment of front and rear wheels.
  2. 2 Device in accordance with Claim 1, whereby the light source is a lazer light source.
