Abstract
A dust collection device 10 comprises a folded bag structure with an opening or pocket 44 at its top and can be placed on a vertical surface adjacent a drilling location such that debris, created by drilling, falls and is collected in the bag. The bag is formed from a blank (20 fig 1) which is folded to provide a back portion 22, a front portion 24 with concertina sides provided by wings 26,28. A strip (23 fig 2) of low peel-strength adhesive is applied to the rear face 21 of back portion 22. A notch 32 in the top of the back portion enables correct positioning of the device adjacent the drilling location. A further notch 30 in front portion 24 minimises the risk of contact of the drill with the bag. The bag may be formed of paper, card, fabric or plastics material.
Description
2341334 COLLECTION DEVICE This invention relates to a collection device.
In particular, this invention relates to the device for the collection of dust and other debris produced during drilling, for example into a wall.
Drilling into surfaces such as walls usually generates a considerable amount of dust, and other plaster, brick, wood or stone debris which has to be cleaned up. Various attempts have been made to collect the dust and other debris as it is generated. For example, mechanical dust extraction devices have been provided which remove airborne particles from around the drill bit. Such devices are relatively cumbersome and prone to damage in the working environment. Dust collection devices in the form of a pouch have been provided which can be arranged under the drill bit and are fixed to the drill. Such dust collection devices are disadvantageous in that they may become damaged, in use, by the rotation of the drill bit or chuck.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a dust collection device comprising a pocket to be attached to a surface to be drilled whereby dust and/or other debris is collected in the pocket, as a hole is created in the surface. The dust collection device according to the invention is advantksgeous in that it can be produced relatively cheaply and therefore sold as a disposable item. Furthermore, the device is simple, relying principally on dust falling into the pocket under the influence of gravity. It will be CP appreciated that the collection device of the invention is not limited to use in drilling into walls, but may be applicable in any situation where debris is formed. For example, the device may be used to collect debris generated by cutting, chipping or carving a material such as wood.
The device of the invention comprises means for attaching the device to the surface. Preferably, the means for attaching the dust collection device to the surface comprises an adhesive. Ile adhesive, which is preferably a low peel strength adhesive, may be applied to a surfaceengaging portion of the pocket. A release paper may be applied to the adhesive prior to use according to the adhesive used.
1 2 Other means by which the dust collection device may be attached to the surface include at least one suction cup, or at least one magnetic pad where the surface to be drilled is ferrous.
The pocket may be formed from paper, card, fabric or a plastics material. Preferably, the dust collection device is of unitary construction.
Preferably, the dust collection device of the invention includes or provides a guide for drilling a hole. The guide may be, for example, a notch or aperture defined by a surface of the dust collection device.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a blank for forming a dust collection device according to the invention, the blank comprising a planar sheet to be 0 folded to form at least the pocket of the dust collection device.
The invention also provides a method of forming a dust collection device, the method comprising folding a blank according to the second aspect of the invention.
According to a third aspect of the invention there is provided a method of collecting dust and/or other debris when forming a hole, the method comprising attaching a dust collection device according to the invention to a surface adjacent where a hole is to be drilled in the surface and drilling the hole whereby the dust and/or other debris is collected in th6 pocket of the device.
A dust collection device according to the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, Figures I and 2, in which:
Figure I is a plan view of a blank for forming a dust collection device according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention; and Figure 2 is a perspective view of a dust collection device formed from the blank of Figure 1.
A unitary blank, generally indicated 20, for forming a dust collection device according to the present invention has a back portion 22 and a front portion 24 joined to one another 3 along a fold line 34 coincident with one of their sides; Wings 26, 28; and recesses or notches 30, 32. In the embodiment shown. the wings 26, 28 are formed on respective sides of the front portion 24 however, as will be appreciated they could equally well be formed on the back portion 22 or even be discrete. The blank 20 is made from recycled paper and is inexpensive to produce.
A recess 330 is formed centrally in the free end of front portion 24. A notch J2 is formed in the free end of the back portion 22. Notch 32 is bevelled to aid the ingress of dust into the bag 10.
The respective free ends of the wings 26, 28 are each provided with a tab 36 for attaching the respective wing to the back portion 22. Each wing 26, 28 has fold lines 38, 40 to enable the assembled dust collection device to be stored flat prior to use.
A strip 23 of low peel-streng-th adhesive (shown in broken outline in Figure 1) is applied to the rear face 21 (outside, in use) of the back portion 22 towards its upper edge 22a. The upper edge of the adhesive strip is shaped to conform to notch 32. Prior to use, the strip may be covered by a release paper (not shown) in a conventional manner depending on the adhesive chosen.
To assemble the dust collection device, generally indicated 10 in Figure 2, each wing 26, 28 is folded along fold line 38 onto the inner side of front portion 24, and then folded in the opposite direction along, fold line 40 such that the tabs 36 extend beyond the respective 0 sides of the front portion 24. The blank 20 is then folded along fold line 34 to form front and back portions 2,4,22 respectively. Tabs 36 are folded along fold lines 42 so as to wrap around the sides of the back portion 22 and be attached to the rear face 21 thereof by gluing, stapling, interconnection of cooperating elements or the like. Advantageously, when the tabs 36 are attached to the rear face 21 there is no gap present between the wings 26, 28 and the front portion 24. The front and back portions 22, 24 and wings 26, 28 together form a pocket 44.
In use, the rear face 21 of the dust collection device 10 is presented to a surface in which a hole is to be drilled, such that the area or an appropriate marking, for example a cross, where the hole is to be drilled is visible to the user within notch 32. The bag 10 is attached 4 to the surface by the strip 23 of adhesive after removal of the release paper. The front portion 24 is allowed to fall forwards (or is manually opened by the user) and the drill (not shown) is presented to the surface in order to drill the hole. Recess 30 minimises the chances of the front portion 24 impeding the drill. Dust or other debris caused to fall from the surface being drilled by the action of the drill is collected within the bag. On completion of the drilling action the dust collection device 10 can be removed from the surface with minimal damage. to the surface by virtue of the low peel-strength of the adhesive. Furthermore, the use of low peel strength adhesive means that the dust collection device can be used several times before it will no longer adhere to a surface. Advantageously, the upper edge 22a, of the back portion 22 can be folded inwardly so that CP the adhesive strip 23 can be used to seal the bag 10 to prevent dust or debris contained in the bag 10 from falling out.
Alternatively an additional sealing means may be provided to close the pocket after use. For example, a further strip of low peel strength adhesive may be applied along the upper ourer-edge of the front portion 24 so that the upper edge back portion 22 may be folded over the pocket contents so that it sticks to the further strip to retain dust in the pocket 44.
It will be appreciated that the notch 32 can have a variety of shapes. For example, it may be rectangular or triangular. Alternatively, an aperture may be formed by the rear portion 22 which acts as a drill guide. Such an aperture may be provided in any suitable location in the drill guide.
Whilst a blank of unitary construction has been described, it will be appreciated dja the device may be produced from a plurality of components. In particular, the front portion 24 may be formed from a relatively dense material so that the pocket will tend to open under gravity.
