Description

2339414 MOTORCYCLE LUGGAGE RACK SYSTEM This invention relates to a
motorcycle luggage rack system.
Motorcycle luggage rack systems are well known and are attached to the frame of the motorcycle. They can comprise of only a horizontal luggage rack (horizontal component) onto which luggage can be strapped or a hard case fitted. In addition they may include a passenger handhold (vertical component). They can alternatively have a tall luggage support (vertical component) designed to support soft bags or packs which slide down over the tall luggage support (vertical component). The soft bag or pack can optionally also be supported on the horizontal luggage rack (horizontal component). The motorcycle luggage rack systems, designed for use with soft bags or packs have support components in both the horizontal and vertical planes.
The motorcycle luggage rack systems that have a tall luggage support (vertical component) are aesthetically unattractive when soft bags or packs are not fitted. On.some luggage rack systems the tall luggage support (vertical component) can be interchanged with a shorter passenger handhold (vertical component). These interchangeable luggage racks include a horizontal luggage rack (horizontal component), are manufactured as one item and have components in both the horizontal and vertical planes.
The motorcycle rider may wish to remove the tall luggage support (vertical r.omponent) when no soft bag or pack is fitted whilst retaining a horizontal luggage rack (horizontal support). The shape of the interchangeable luggage racks that have components at right angles makes the interchangeable luggage racks difficult to carry on a motorcycle where there is only limited storage space. The shape of the interchangeable luggage racks also makes them difficult to stack, store, pack and transport. The interchangeable luggage racks are manufactured as one item comprising of both the vertical and horizontal components, when only the vertical component needed to be interchanged.
The present invention is a load supporting system for mounting above the rear wheel of a motorcycle comprising two arms respectively connectable to the frame of the vehicle and extending rearwardly at the sides thereof to terminate in a pair of upwardly directed prongs at the rear of the vehicle, a generally horizontal platform having a pair of sockets engagable with said prongs, and a U-shaped hoop upstanding from said platform and being separable therefrom by having a pair of legs detachably engagable in said sockets, Including locking means for securing said platform to said arms and also for securing said hoop to said platform, said locking means being capable of manipulation such as to permit separation of said components from one another.
2 A motorcycle luggage rack system that incorporates vertical double socket connections that link all the separate major components. The separate major components are: mounting brackets; horizontal luggage rack; vertical passenger handhold; and vertical luggage support.
The custom-made mounting brackets attach to each side of the motorcycle frame and terminate vertically towards the rear of the motorcycle. The horizontal luggage rack (horizontal component) slides down over the outside of the vertical mounting brackets. The tall luggage support (vertical component), which the soft bag or pack slides over, is a separate item and slides down inside the vertical mounting brackets. This luggage support (vertical component) can be interchanged with a passenger handh old (vertical component), which slides down inside the vertical mounting brackets. The horizontal component is independent of the vertical component. The mounting brackets, horizontal component, and / or vertical component are all secured simultaneously by releasable locking devices fitted at the vertical double socket connections.
Releasable locking devices are fitted to the outer sleeves of the vertical double socket connections.
The releasable locking devices are screwed fasteners with a lock nut.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example.with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: - FIGURE I shows in perspective an exploded view of the separate major components of the motorcycle luggage rack system.
FIGURE 2 shows a cross section of a vertical double socket connection and releaseable screwed locking device.
Referring to the drawing, the motorcycle luggage rack system comprises of, custom made mounting brackets 10, a horizontal luggage, rack 11, a passenger handhold 12 and a luggage support 13. Releasable screwed locking devices 14, attached to the outer sleeves of item 11 simultaneously secure the components together at the vertical double socket connections.
In order to fit the motorcycle luggage rack system the custom-made mounting brackets are attached to the appropriate points on the motorcycle frame. These mounting points vary between motorcycles. The horizontal luggage rack slides down over the mounting brackets and is secured with the locking devices. If either a passenger handhold or a luggage support is required the locking devices are released, the passenger handhold or luggage support inserted into the mounting brackets and the locking devices secured.
To re-configure or remove the motorcycle luggage rack system the steps described above are reversed.

  1. I A load supporting system for mounting above the rear wheel of a motorcycle comprising two arms respectively connectable to the frame of the vehicle and extending rearwardly at the sides thereof to terminate in a pair of upwardly directed prongs at the rear of the vehicle, a generally horizontal platform having a pair of sockets engagable with said prongs, and a U-shaped hoop upstanding fi7orn said platform and being separable therefrom by having a pair of legs detachably engagable in said sockets.
  2. 2 A system as set out in Claim I and including locking means for securing said platform to said arms and also for securing said hoop to said platform, said locking means being capable of manipulation such as to permit separation of said components fforn one another.
  3. 3 A motorcycle luggage rack system that incorporates vertical double socket connections that link all the separate major components. The separate major components are: mounting brackets; horizontal luggage rack; vertical passenger handhold; and vertical luggage support.
  4. 4 A motorcycle luggage rack system as claimed in Claim 3 where the custommade mounting brackets attach to each side of the motorcycle frame and terminate vertically towards the rdar of the motorcycle. The horizontal luggage rack (horizontal pomponent) slides down over the outside of the vertical mounting brackets. The tall luggage support (vertical component), which the soft bag or pack slides over, is a separate item and slides down inside the vertical mounting brackets. This luggage support (vertical component) can be interchanged with a passenger handhold (vertical component), which slides down inside the vertical mounting brackets. The horizontal component is independent of the vertical component. The mounting brackets, horizontal component, and / or vertical components are all secured simultaneously by releasable locking devices fitted at the double socket connections.
  5. A motorcycle luggage rack system as claimed in Claim 3 or Claim 4 where releasable locking devices are fitted to the outer sleeves of the vertical double socket connections.
  6. 6 A motorcycle luggage rack system as claimed in Claim 3 or Claim 4 or Claim 5 where the releasable locking devices are screwed fasteners with a lock nut.
