Ordnance design; breech mechanism; multi-charge; muzzle-loading.- A differential recoil gun of howitzer, trench mortar, grenade riflle, or like type, is run out by a separate propelling charge. In the muzzle-loading howitzer shown, the barrel a is slidablv mounted in an outer tube c within which is a chamber e for a primary propelling charge. The charge q for propelling the projectile k is fired by a striker b which is actuated during the run out by mechanism comprising a lever h, rod g, and stop f. To assist in reducing the recoil, some of the gases of the propelling charge are led into the space behind the barrel through passages l, m. A projectile driv ing band s is inserted between coned surfaces on the projectile and on a false base r so that, on firing, the band is expanded outwardly. The mounting comprises a spade d, Fig. 4, to which the outer tube c is attached by a suitable universal joint, and a bipod support n having elevating and traversing means o, p. A buffer spring may be inserted between the tube and the spade. The invention may also be applied to breech-loading guns.
