Abstract

A shelter/tent (tetrahedral in shape), having a combined cover and groundsheet 1, which can be secured to the ground via points 2,3 and 4 prior to installation of the tent pole assembly in the tent mouth 5. After securing guy rope(s) 6, additional points 7 can be used to further secure the tent to the ground. In situations where the tent cannot be fully erected, the mouth of the tent can be closed to create a bivvi bag by using the drawstring 8 (see Fig 2). This drawstring passes through both the tent cover and the groundsheet and may be secured by use of cord locks. An optional emergency banner (requesting assistance) 9 can be fitted over tent cover 1 using securing points 3, 4 and 7.

Description

1 EMERGENCY SHELTER 2337773 The invention relates to a compact and
lightweight emergency shelter (tetrahedral in shape) Conventional tents are designed to be both roomy and robust and therefore tend to acquire the following characteristics: - They tend to be relatively heavy They tend to have significant folded dimensions They tend to be difficult for a single person to erect particularly in bad weather They are often unusable in rocky sites Consequently people ova walking for the day rarely carry any form of shelter and can therefore, be subjected to considerable discomfort andlor exposure when overtaken by bad weather.
According to the present invention there is provided a lightweight emergency shelter with the following specifications: - A shelter/tent light enough to encourage regular inclusion in normal walking equipment A shelter with combined groundsheet which can be quickly erected in poor weather by one person A shelter which can be used as a tent or as a bivvi bag A shelter which can accommodate a single adult and rucksack/daypack.
The attachment of an optional Day-Glo emergency banner, when assistance is required Fig 1 - shows the tent in side elevation Fig 2 - shows the tent entrance, front elevation Fig 3 - shows the tent in plan view (with optional Day-Glo emergency banner) Referring to drawings 1, 2 and 3, the shelter is erected by the procedures outlined below: - 1 a- On removing the tent 1 from the carrying bag, the securing point 2 at the shallow end of the tent is secured to the ground. This is normally undertaken so as to enable the tent to be erected with the pointed-end facing the direction of the wind.
The tent is then unrolled (in the direction of the wind) until the mouth of the tent exposed, whereupon the remaining two corners of the tent/groundsheet 3 and 4 are secured to the ground via securing points 3 and 4.
The tent pole assembly is then fitted into the mouth of the tent 5 and the tent erected by me of the attached guy rope(s) 6, which are then secured to the ground, 0 Addition securing points 7 can be used to further secure the tent/groundsheet to the ground.
0 If conditions do not allow full erection of the ten a bag can be constructed by drawing the cord 8 (see Fig 2) fitted into both the ground shed and the bottom of the tent doors.
0 The optional day-glow emergency banner 9 (see Fig 3) can be fitted to the tent using securing points 3, 4 and 7 0 Re-packing the tent is simply a matter of reversing the procedure, so as to prepare the tent for quick and easy erection when next needecL

Claims (4)

  1. EMERGENCY SHIELTER I. A lightweight shelter comprising of both a water-resistant cover, integral groundsheet tent pole assembly, tent mouth draw string and optional Day-Go emergency banner which can be used either as a tent or a bivvi bag.
  2. 2. A lightweight shelter as claimed in Claim 1, which due to its tetrahedral shape can be easily deployed in poor weather conditions.
  3. 3. A lightweight shelter as claimed in Claim 2, whose tetrahedral shape offers low wind resistance (and therefore stability) in poor weather conditions.
  4. 4. A lightweight shelter as claimed in Claim 1, Which may also be used as a bivvi bag when required.
