Abstract
A sock comprising, a low moisture absorption fibre in a foot portion 10, a medium moisture absorption fibre, e.g. knitted in individual wales within the foot portion, to form a number of branches 16, leading to a stem 18, at the top of which, the ankle portion 12 is knitted of a high moisture absorption fibre. The stems are provided with a number of roots 20, knitted in a decorative arrangement into the ankle, to facilitate evaporation, thus, in use, the sweat is attracted towards the medium moisture absorption fibres, and then to the high moisture absorption fibres of the ankle and/or leg portion, where the sweat can evaporate relatively freely. The low absorption fibres may be polyester, with the medium absorption fibres polyamide or polypropylene, and the high absorption fibres cotton or wool. Each sock comprises plain knitting throughout, with thin denier stretch nylon throughout, to hold the sock together, and has terry loops in the low moisture absorption fibres of the foot portion. Depending on the requirements of the wearer the sock may be provided with a leg portion 14.
Description
2337444 1 TITLE
Stockings and socks DESCRIPTION
Technical Field
The invention relates to stockings and socks for wear, particularly when taking part in sports such as football, basketball, squash or tennis, for example.
The Problem The feet of an athlete taking part in sport become hot and perspire. The removal of sweat from the socks in wear is a major factor for comfort. The foot and sometimes the ankle is covered in a shoe or boot which hinders the evaporation of sweat, while such evaporation can take place more readily from the ankle or leg portion of the sock. The problem therefore is to remove sweat from the foot portion of the sock.
The Invention The invention provides a stocking or sock having different fibres in parts as follows.. a low moisture absorption fibre in the foot portion, a medium moisture absorption fibre leading from the foot up towards the ankle, and a high moisture absorption fibre in the ankle. Thus in use the sweat is attracted towards the medium moisture absorption, and thence towards the high moisture absorption fibre of the ankle and/or leg portion where the sweat can evaporate relatively freely.
The medium moisture absorption fibre leading from the foot up towards the ankle may be in individual wales uniformly or irregularly distributed around the sock to form stems for the conduction of sweat. These stems may be of constant width or may widen up towards the ankle. The stems are preferably provided with branches, particularly in the foot region.
The low moisture absorption fibre may be of polyester having a larger surface area than round cross-section fibres, preferably the four-channel fibre sold under the Trade Mark COOLMAX, or a very fine filament polyamide microfibre sold under the trade Mark TACTEL. The medium moisture absorption fibre may be a medium filament polyamide or polypropylene. The high moisture absorption fibre may be cotton or wool.
The stitch structure may be constant, for example plain knit or terry throughout the stocking or sock, or terry only in the stems and/or branches or over the foot and ankle portions. The foot particularly may be plain knit throughout. Generally however the sock is knitted with thin denier stretch nylon throughout to hold the sock together and provide a base for plating with the other fibres, which may plain or terry for example.
The colour of the yarn (s) may be varied as a marketing tool, for example so as to emphasize the branches and/or stem. The weight of the yarn(s) may be standard for socks, for example from 4 to 18 gauge. The pattern can be developed by computer technology to select needles as required. The stocking or sock may be knitted on a single cylinder machine to which the computer technology has been applied or on a double cylinder machine.
The width of the branches and stem may vary, but is generally from 1 to 3 wales, and may for example increase up the stem. There may be from 1 to 20, generally about 12 courses between branches, but the precise number is unimportant.
Drawings Figure 1 is a computer printout of the stitch pattern of an short sock according to the invention; Figure 2 is a computer printout of the stitch pattern of a long sock or half-hose according to the invention; Figure 3 is a computer printout of the stitch pattern of an ankle sock according to the invention; and Figures 4, 5 and 6 are similar but with different configurations of the stems and branches.
Each of these socks has essentially the same stitch pattern, although the configuration of the stems and branches varies, so the following detailed description relates equally to each. The socks are knitted continuously from stretch nylon for stretch, elasticity and comfort. Each comprises a foot portion 10, an ankle portion 12 and in the case of the long sock of Figure 2 a leg portion 14.
Each sock comprises plain knitting throughout, with thin denier stretch nylon throughout to hold the sock together, and has terry loops in the foot portion 10 of low moisture absorption polyester. In the foot portion 10 also, there are knitted of medium moisture absorption fibre a number of branches 16 leading to a stem 18. The stems 18 all lead up into the ankle portion 12 where they are provided with a number of roots 20 knitted in a decorative arrangement into the ankle to facilitate evaporation. The ankle portions 12 are knitted of a high moisture absorption cotton fibre.
The width of the branches 16, stems 18 and roots 20 is each 3 wales giving a width of about one eighth of an inch, and there are twelve courses between adjacent branches and roots.
