Abstract

An added safety overtaking mirror comprises a main housing, fitted with an adjustable reflector, attached to an adjustable support. The mirror 14 is suitably positioned and attached to a vehicle such that it gives increased forward vision, to that which is normal in the rear facing overtaking mirrors 11, as it enables the driver of a vehicle to see in his rear facing overtaking mirrors a reflection from the forward facing added safety overtaking mirror. Alternatively, if required, a small rear facing reflector could be attached to the rear facing mirrors provided by the vehicle manufacturers. The invention, when used this way is suitable for all existing light vehicles (cars and vans). A larger version could be used for commercial vehicles, comprising of a forward facing mirror, attached to a bracket secured to the side or top or part of a vehicle and a seperate rear facing mirror positioned to reflect the image to the driver. The invention also allows for a rear facing overtaking mirror with a forward facing added safety overtaking mirror incorporated in the housing design at manufacture. This concept allows for the added safety overtaking mirror to become an intrinsic part of the rear view overtaking mirror and would be suitable for fitting to new vehicles on manufacture. The reflectors could be flat, convex or concave, as a matter of preference. If required the joint securing the main housing to the support, could be made to release on impact.

Description

1 ADDED SAFETY OVERTAKING MIRROR 2336576 This invention relates to an
added safety overtaking mirror.
Overtaking mirrors are well known, and are already fitted to most vehicles, mainly being mounted to the door or suitable part of a vehicle. However overtaking mirrors in their present form, although providing an essential rear view, they are of no assistance for seeing oncoming traffic or hazards, if the drivers view is obstructed by a vehicle directly in front of the drivers vehicle. This becomes especially noticable if driving on the right hand side of the road (e.g. Europe) in.. .a right hand drive vehicle, or on the left hand side of the road (e.g. Britain) in a left hand drive vehicle. The problem is also accentuated whilst trying to overtake slower moving vehicles on two or three lane roads with oncoming traffic. An object of this invention is to give an added view whilst driving, to enable safer overtaking manouvers, if your normal vision ahead is obstructed by another vehicle, directly in front of you.
Accordingly this invention provides a forward facing overtaking mirror, comprising of a mirror, a mirror housing and fitting device.
Preferably, the mirror housing and fitting device is made of plastics material, but it may instead be made of metal or GRP, or from a combination of these materials.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
FIGURE 1 shows in perspective a diagonal view of the whole overtaking mirror; FIGURE 2 is a section taken vertically through the length of the overtaking mirror showing the internal components;.
1 2 FIGURE 3 shows a normal rear view overtaking mirror and the position of the image from the added safety overtaking mirror to the driver; FIGURE 4 shows the typical vision of a driver using conventional mirrors.
FIGURE 5 shows the extra view obtained when the added safety overtaking mirror is fitted; As shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2 the added safety overtaking mirror conprises of a reflector 3 supported in a main body 1.
The main body and support are adjustable where connected (Figure 1) by means of a joint 4.ds s The reflector as shown in Figure 2 is supported in the main body by means of a backing plate 5, adjustable joint 6 and reflector support mounting 6A.
A rain shield 7 is incorporated in the main body 1, Figure 1 and Figure 2.
When the invention is attached to a vehicle by means of support bracket 2, the main body is adjustable by means of joint 4 and the reflector by means of joint 6, to enable better vision.
On drawing 2/3 and drawing 313, Figure 4 and Figure 5, the rectangle 9 represents a vehicle moving in the direction of the main arrowt. 8 represents a vehicle directly in front of 9. 10 represents the driver of 9. 11 represents two rear facing mirrors. The drivers normal field of forward vision beyond 8 to left and right is shown as 12. The drivers' normal vision in both left and right rear facing mirrors is shown as 13. Therefore a drivers normal vision beyond obstruction 8 using only rear facing mirrors and normal available forward vision. would be restricted to 12.
3 On drawing 313 Figure 5 the rectangle 9 represents a vehicle moving in the direction of the main arrowt, 8 represents a vehicle directly in front of 9. The two forward facing added safety overtaking mirrors are shown as 14. Besides normal fields of vision shown as 12 and 13 Figure 3, the driver now has the benefit of the extra vision shown as 15 (Figure 4). That is reflected to the driver via the rear facing mirrors.
In Figure 3 drawing 1/3, 11 illustrates a typical'housing of a rear facing overtaking mirror as in common use. 16 is the rear facing mirror glass. The drivers view of the road ahead and oncoming traffic and hazards reflected from the added safety overtaking mirror, onto the rear facing overtaking mirror is shown as 17 (shaded area).
