Abstract

A sling for supporting the head or other body part of a user is essentially of triangular form and has support straps 4 secured at convenient support points on the sheet 1. An adjustment mechanism comprises a first portion 5 formed from a soft fabric material secured to the sheet 1 and a second portion 6 having a hooked array formed on the face which locates over the pad 5. The portion 6 can be lifted and moved to any desired position over the area of the pad 5, so as to create a gathering of the material of the sheet 1, whereby the shape of the sheet 1 can be modified to suit particular conditions of use required by the person whose head is being supported.

Description

2335358 1 "Improvements relating to Support Slings" Slings for supporting
part of the body (for example the head of a person) may comprise a sheet of material provided with carrying straps. Such slings cannot readily be modified to suit different sizes of persons or to allow for support to protect a particular injury or disability.
According to the present invention there is provided a sling for supporting part of the body and comprising a sheet of material with carrying straps projecting from strategic points on the sheet, and at least one adjustment mechanism for altering the shape of the sheet, each mechanism having a pair of mutually- interlocking but detachable portions separately attached to individual points on the sheet, which portions can be interlocked in a variety of positions to achieve a desired gathering of the sheet material.
With such an arrangement the shape of the sheet can be modified to suit a particular requirement by fixing the two portions of the adjustment mechanism together in a desired position.
It is preferred that each of the adjustment mechanisms should be located adjacent to a position at which a strap is attached to the sheet. Ideally there will be an essentially symmetrical balanced array of adjustment mechanisms, when more than one is employed.
Each adjustment mechanism can be in the form of a soft fabric pad on one portion, together with a hooked array on the other portion which can be interlocked with the soft fabric. Ideally the soft fabric portion will extend over a 4 CLAIMS
1. A sling for supporting part of the bodyand comprising a sheet of material with carrying straps project ing from strategic points on the sheet, and at least one adjustment mechanism for altering the shape of the sheet, each adjustment mechanism having a pair of mutuallyinter locking but detachable portions separately attached to individual points on the sheet, which portions can be interlocked in a variety of positions to achieve a desired gathering of the sheet material.

Claims (1)

  1. 2. A sling according to Claim 1, wherein each of the adjustment mechanisms
is located adjacent to a position at which a strap is attached to the sheet.
    3. A sling according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein is there is an essentially symmetrical balanced array of adjustment mechanisms, when more than one is employed.
    4. A sling according to any one of Claims 1 to 3, wherein each adjustment mechanism is in the form of a soft fabric pad on one portion, together with a hooked array on the other portion which can be interlocked with the soft fabric.
    5. A sling according to Claim 4, wherein the soft portion extends over a relatively large area, over which a smaller other portion can be selectively located.
    6. A sling according to any one of Claims 1 to 5, in the form of an essentially triangular head support.
    7. A sling substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
i 3 used for the two portions 5 and 6 is ideally that sold under the Trade Mark VELCRO. In its normal state, the portion 6 will just overlie the pad 5, as shown in Figures 1 and 2. However the portion 6 can be lifted and moved to any desired position over the area of the pad 5, so as to create a gathering of the material of the sheet 1, as indicated at 8 in Figure 3. By this means the shape of the sheet 1 can be modified to suit particular conditions of use required by the person whose head is being supported. The desired postural positioning of the head can be done on both or one side only of the sheet 1.
of course more adjustment mechanism structures comprising the portions 5 and 6 can be located elsewhere on the sheet 1 as may be required for particular purposes.
Furthermore such adjustment mechanisms can be applied to slings of shapes other than that shown in Figure 1, which may be employed for supporting other parts of the body of a user.
