Description

LOG OR JOURNAL The present invention relates to a log or journal suitable for use on extended journeys or travel.
Ever increasing numbers of people are undertaking longer and more remote journeys. Often such journeys are undertaken by young people or others for whom there is a need to keep in more or less regular contact with those left behind. Such travellers also often desire to keep a record of their travels. These objects are conventionally satisfied by a number of different means such as writing pads, diaries, photograph albums of one kind or another etc. Such means are however relatively cumbersome and time consuming to manage with the result that the record can become degraded e.g. photos mislaid or lose their relationship with the written record, and the extent of record keeping and/or communication with base reduced.
It is an object of the present invention to avoid or minimise one or more of the above disadvantages.
The present invention provides a log or journal comprising a cover and a multiplicity of record page sets, each set comprising a first sheet having a permanent record area for storing a manuscript log or journal entry, and a memorabilia storage area for mounting of generally planar memorabilia (for example, photographs, literature etc.) associated with said log or journal entry, and at least one detachable second sheet having a record area corresponding to said permanent record area, and including duplicating means for copying a manuscript log or journal entry from one to the other of said first and second sheets.
Preferably said log or journal includes a scratch pad means for erasable temporary storage of manuscript data for use in compiling a log or journal entry.
In use of the log, details of the journey may be readily entered onto a record page set thereby automatically producing both a record copy which is retained by the traveller, and a further copy which can be detached and mailed and/or sent via telefacsimile transmission back to base or any other desired location. At the same time any memorabilia such as photographs, postcards, tourist attraction literature, visiting cards of people met, etc etc, associated with said log or journal entry, may be mounted on the memorabilia storage area thereby preserving the memorabilia themselves as well as their relation with the associated log or journal entry. Where a scratch pad means is provided, this has the advantage of allowing the user to make an instant record of items likely to be required for inclusion into a log or journal entry thereby facilitating writing up of the log at a more suitable opportunity.
Thus with a log or journal of the present invention it is possible to maintain a well organized log including both textual records and linked memorabilia, and keep in contact with base and/or another party, in a particularly convenient and efficient manner.
Various forms of duplicating means are known in the art.
Conveniently there is used carbon paper, or preferably carbonless paper sets, together with a generally rigid or semi-rigid backing or support sheet to enhance copying within a record page set whilst substantially preventing copying to another paper set. Conveniently the backing sheet includes the scratch pad means. In this case the backing sheet itself, or at least the scratch pad area surface thereof, is generally of a substantially nonabsorbent material. Thus for example the backing sheet may have a coating of a plastics film or have a surface layer painted with a material providing a smooth non-absorbent writing surace. The backing sheet may be in the form of a discrete panel or more conveniently is hingedly connected to a back cover panel of the log so that it is securely stored and readily folded out for transfer from one record page set to another.
Conveniently the detachable second sheet(s) is of an airmail weight and quality paper to facilitate mailing thereof. It will be appreciated that the number of second sheets included in each set could be selected in accordance with the expected requirements of the user. Thus for example if it was expected that communications would need to be sent to two or more different addressees then a corresponding number of second sheets would be included in each set. If desired a heavier weight and/or more durable e.g. more tear resistant, and/or plastics material coated, paper or material is used for the first, permanent record, sheet. The memorabilia storage area is generally in the form of a part of the first sheet, which extends or is disposable substantially outwith the extent of the detachable second sheet(s) in at least one configuration of the second sheet. The memorabilia may be secured to the storage area by any suitable means such as transparent adhesive tape, liquid or semi-solid adhesive, double-sided adhesive tape or tabs, etc. Conveniently the storage area is provided with a plurality of spaced apart adhesive patches protected by release paper which can be removed as required for placing of a photograph or the like over one or more patches as required so as to adhesively attach the photograph to the storage area.
In order to facilitate usage of the record page sets then these are advantageouly preprinted with suitable matter such as legends or indicators such as: "date", "country", "location", "from", "to" etc for facilitating entry of corresponding data such as: addressee information, sender identification etc. Suitable headers such as "FAX/LETTER", and "JOURNAL RECORD" and "MEMORABILIA" are conveniently provided on the second sheet, and on respective portions of the first sheet of each page set.
The page sets may be mounted in any suitable kind of binding. Thus for example there may be used a sewn binding or an adhesive binding. Advantageously. though there is used a releasable binding such as a screwed stud binding or a ring binding which has the advantages of allowing additional page sets readily to be inserted when required as well as facilitating the-inclusion in the journal of various reusable accessories such as pocket pages for holding phone cards and the like, postage stamps, receipts etc; a ruler; a hole punch; a calculator; information sheets such as maps, timetables etc; preprinted record sheets e.g. for personal information, expenses records etc.
The binder may have a hardback or a more or less flexible softback outer cover, and advantageously includes some sort of closure means for holding the binder in a closed position when not in use in order to protect its contents e.g. elastic loops or straps with releasable fasteners such as press stud or hook and loop fasteners.
Further preferred features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following detailed description given by way of example of a preferred embodiment illustrated with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a journal of the invention in an open condition.
Fig. 1 shows a journal 1 comprising a ring binder 2 with a plurality of carbonless paper duplicating record page sets 3 (only two shown for clarity). Each page set 3 comprises a first, permanent record, sheet 4 overlaid by a second sheet 5 which is removable from the binder 2 after completion of the journey write-up 6 on that page, for mailing of that second sheet 5 back to base or some other desired addressee. In more detail the first sheet 4 has a permanent written entry record area 7 substantially coextensive with the second sheet 5, and a memorabilia storage area 8 extending outwardly from the free outer edge 9 of the written entry record area 7. Normally the memorabilia storage area 8 is folded back behind the written entry record area 7 as shown at the left-hand side of Fig. 1. When it is desired to view memorabilia such as photographs 10 alongside the associated write-up 6, then the memorabilia storage area 8 is drawn out from behind the latter as shown at the right-hand side of Fig. 1. This configuration is also normally used when writing up a journal page so as to avoid duplicating the text onto the memorabilia storage area 8 and possibly damaging any memorabilia which may already have been mounted. In order to facilitate mounting of memorabilia, the memorabilia storage area 8 is provided with adhesive patches 11 covered with removable release paper 12 until they are required to be used.
In order to prevent copying of write-up 6 from one page set to a subsequent one behind it, a suitable backing or support sheet is used immediately behind the current page set 3 in the usual way. This could be in the form of a loose sheet simply inserted as required, with or without being clipped into the ring binding 13. As shown in Fig. 1 though, there is conveniently provided a hinged panel 14 with an inner portion 15 which is disposed at or towards the rear of the binder 2, a central hinge portion 16 which is conveniently provided with a loop or socket (not shown) for storing a writing implement 17, and an outer portion 18 shown in an opened out configuration in Fig. 1. The front face 19 of this outer portion 18 has a scratch pad means in the form of a wipe clean panel 20 on which temporary notes 21 may be made immediately, for example, when the opportunity for proper writing-up of the journal is not available for some time. When the outer portion 18 is folded back inside the binder it may readily be inserted behind any page set and more particularly behind a page set in current use so that its rear face 22 serves as a backing sheet there for.
Various forms of suitable ring binder mechanism 13 are known in the art but the six ring type used in Filofax (Trade Mark) is particularly convenience as a wide range of accessories and material pre-punched for binding in with this mechanism is readily available. The outer covering 2 of the binder 2 is conveniently of semi-hardback form and provided with a closure means. This could be a strap 24 with a press-stud fastener (not shown) on the binder back cover and can be pulled over the front cover 23 to secure the binder with its contents in a closed condition.
