Abstract

Brake lights on a car are operated so that they flash when the brakes are applied and the car is slowing down, but give a steady non-flashing output when the car comes to a halt. An automatic control for the brake lights may be responsive to a device which senses motion over the ground, or the control may be responsive to a wheel rotation sensor such as is used for Automatic Braking Systems (ABS).

DESCRIPTION.
Standard car braking systems activate a pair of red lights at the back of the C5. & car whenever the brake pedal is depressed. This activation is either due to hydraulic pressure inside the system or removal of physical pressure on a spring load electrical switch activated by the movement of the brake pedals away from the switch. Durin- this time the red liehts remain on constantly until the pressure is removed.
VARIANT BRAKE LIGHTING SYSTEM. The red LED flasher systems for cyclists are extremely visible and attracts attention by their pulsing light far more that a constant red fluht.
C5. c 1 propose a system on cars that when the brake is applied the brake lights come on and give pulsed light whilst the car is still moving, but when the car come to a halt the red brake lights become steady. This would alert the person behind far more than a constant light, but would not be an irritant to him when waiting at the traffic lights since the pulsation would stop once the vehicle had come to a complete halt. The control for such lights would be automatic, either a motion sensing C5 l> device over the around or a rotation sensor attached to the wheels such C5 as is used for ABS braking systems. This connect in-line with the electrical C5 supply to the red rear brake lights.
2 In a non-ABS equiped car the motion sensing device would be preferable since it would continue to function if the car was skiddina. Such a s stem c y would also continue to function in an ABS equipped car where the ABS system had malfunctioned or failed. I maintain that it is simple, would be inexpensive to incorporate on new cars, would be highly effective and a major help in reducing or preventing many of the rear-end shunts that we see today, most of which are caused by driver inattention and error.

Claims (1)

  1. CLAIMS.
    VARIANT BRAKE LIGHTING SYSTEM. Red multiple LED flasher systems for cyclists are extremely visible and attract attention by their pulsing light far more that a constant red light.
    C & I propose a system on cars that when the brake is applied the brake lights C come on and give a pulsed light whilst the car is still movinc,,, but slowing down.
    C5 & C1 When the car come to a halt the red brake lights become steady. This would alert the person behind, but would not be an irritant to him when waiting at the trafFic lights since the pulsation would stop once the vehicle had come to a complete halt. The control for such lights would be automatic, either a motion sensing device over the ground or a rotation sensor attached to the wheels such as is used for ABS (Automatic Braking System) braking, systems.
    C This control system connected in-line with the electrical supply to the red rear brake lights.
    C In a non-ABS equipped car the motion sensing device would be preferable to a rotation sensing system since it would continue to function even if the car was skidding. Such a system would also continue to function in an ABS equipped car where the ABS system had malfunctioned or failed and could be a separate and subsidiary system.
