Abstract
A jig comprises first and second jaws (8,2) having opposed planar surfaces for clamping a workpiece (6) therebetween. The jig further comprises a tool guide (28) which is connected to the first jaw (8) and has a guiding edge rotatably adjustable in a plane coplanar with the surface of the first jaw (8), or parallel to and immediately adjacent the surface of the first jaw (8). In use, a planar workpiece (6) such as a plank may thus be firmly clamped in the jig, with the edge of the tool guide (28) lying immediately adjacent the surface of the workpiece to accurately position the cutting edge of a tool.
Description
2331480 !L19 The present invention relates to a jig for forming accurate
cuts in or through a workpiece.
It is sometimes required to form accurate angled cuts in or through a workpiece such as a plank of wood. For f orming such cuts it is necessary to hold the workpiece f irmly in place, and various devices have been proposed for this purpose.
It is also desirable to provide an adjustable abutting surface for guiding the tool relative to the workpiece. However, such guiding means are not satisfactorily provided by existing workpiece holding devices.
I have now devised an arrangement which overcomes the limitations of existing jigs.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a jig comprising first and second jaws having opposed planar surfaces for clamping a workpiece therebetween, and a tool guide connected to the first jaw and having a guiding edge rotatably adjustable in a plane coplanar with the jaw surface, or parallel to and immediately adjacent the jaw surface.
In use, a planar workpiece such as a plank may thus be firmly clamped in the jig, with the edge of the tool guide lying immediately adjacent its surface to accurately position the cutting edge of a tool.
Preferably the opposed planar surfaces of the first and second jaws are horizontally aligned. In this case, preferably the surface of the first jaw is vertically adjustable relative to the surface of said second jaw which preferably comprises the upper surface of a workbench upon which the workpiece is supported. Preferably the upper surface of the workbench comprises one or more raised portions which the workpiece may abut.
Also in accordance with the present invention, there is provided a jig comprising a first portion for attaching to a planar support surface so that a planar surface of a second portion connected to the first portion extends parallel to and opposite the support surface, means for adjusting the height of the second portion relative to the first portion to vary the 2 distance between the surf ace of the second portion and the support surface, and a tool guide connected to the second portion and having a guiding edge rotatably adjustable in a plane coplanar with the surface of the second portion, or parallel to and immediately adjacent surface of the second portion.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a jig in accordance with the present invention; and Figure 2 is a perspective view of the jig in use.
Referring to the drawings, a jig is shown comprising a horizontal support surface 2 having a raised edge 4 which a is workpiece 6 abuts, and an planar member 8, horizontally opposed to the support surface and vertically adjustable to clamp the workpiece in place.
The jig also comprises a housing 10, the top of which is formed with an aperture 12 through which the handle portion 14 of a threaded shaft 16 projects.
The threaded shaft 16 passes through a corresponding threaded aperture 18 in the planar member 8 so that by turning the handle 14 the threaded shaft 16 may be rotated to raise or lower the planar member.
A pair of guide rods 20,22, connected between the housing 8 and the support surface 2, pass through respective apertures 24,26 in the planar member 8, and act to maintain the horizontal alignment of the planar member and to prevent its rotation about the threaded shaft 16.
The planar member 8 is tapered at one end to allow an elongate tool guide 28 to be rotatably attached thereto. The tool guide 28 and planar member 8 are connected by a locking screw 30 which may be loosened or tightened to respectively adjust or fix the position of the tool guide.
Whilst a tool guide having a linear guiding edge is shown, it would remain in accordance with the present invention for the tool guide to comprise an arcuate guiding edge to form corresponding arcuate cuts in the supported workpiece.
Also, as shown in Figure 2, the jig may comprise 3 additional clamping means 32 for holding the plank in position.
The arrangement thus described provides a readily adjustable means for forming accurate cuts in or through a workpiece.
4 claims 1) A jig comprising first and second jaws having opposed planar surfaces for clamping a workpiece therebetween, and a tool guide connected to said first jaw and having a guiding edge rotatably adjustable in a plane coplanar with the surface of said first jaw, or parallel to and immediately adjacent the surface of said first jaw.
Claims (1)
- 2) A jig as claimed in Claim 1, wherein said opposed planar surfaces ofsaid first and second jaws are horizontally aligned.3) A jig as claimed in claim 2, wherein the surface of said first jaw is vertically adjustable relative to the surface of said second jaw.4) A jig as claimed in Claim 2 or Claim 3, wherein said second jaw comprises the upper surface of a workbench upon which said workpiece is supported.5) A jig as claimed in claim 4, wherein said upper surface of said workbench comprises one or more raised portions which said workpiece may abut.6) A jig comprising a first portion for attaching to a planar support surface so that a planar surface of a second portion connected to said first portion extends parallel to and opposite said support surface, means for adjusting the height of said second portion relative to said first portion to vary the distance between said surface of said second portion and said support surface, and a tool guide connected to said second portion and having a guiding edge rotatably adjustable in a plane coplanar with said surface of said second portion, or parallel to and immediately adjacent said surface of said second portion.7) A jig substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
