Abstract
A drill bit comprises a shaft 1 with a drill head 2. Along the shaft 1 are a plurality of marks 3 which serve to indicate the depth to which the drill has penetrated. The marks may comprise a series of grooves or may take the form of inked markings or may be a series of metallic bands that are soldered or welded to the shaft.
Description
1-1 2331261 DRILL BIT is This invention relates to a drill bit.
In the field of masonry drilling in particular, but also with other types of drilling operations, it is often necessary to drill a hole of a particular depth in surface. With conventional drill bits, judgement of the depth to which a drill bit has penetrated a surface, and therefore the depth of the hole generated, is a matter of guesswork. If a hole has been drilled too short, then one can drill further with a second attempt, but if the hole has been drilled too deep, it is difficult or impossible to rectify.
Attempts have been made in the past to provide gauges for measuring the extent of penetration of a drill bit but these have been rather cumbersome devices. Alternatively, some artisans have made temporary depth gauges upon the drill bits themselves by, for example, securing pieces of ape at intervals along the drill bit. These may provide a crude indication of depth of penetration but can easily be dislodged by the drilling action itself, leading to inaccuracy or the risk of damage to the drill.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved drill bit depth gauge.
According to the present invention, there is provided a drill bit provided, at one or more positions along its surface, with permanently applied depth marking.
The permanently applied depth markings are most preferably formed by one or more radial grooves cut into the surface of the drill bit.
Preferably, two or more grooves are provided, spaced apart by chosen distances, along the surface of the drill but and these may be, for example, at intervals of one inches, two inches, one centimetre, two centimetres or any other desired intervals.
The drill bit is preferably a masonry drill bit but may be any other type of drill bit.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings which shows a masonry drill bit.
According to the figure, a masonry drill bit comprises a shaft 1 and a drilling head 2. Provided at spaced intervals along the surface of the shaft are radial grooves 3 which may be for example one inch (2.54 c::ntimetres) apart.
In use, the drill bit is mounted to a drill in known manner and applied to a surface so that when the first of the grooves reaches the surface itself, the user knows for certain that the drill bit has penetrated to a certain predetermined depth. If this depth is not sufficient, then he may continued applying the drill bit until the second groove 3 (for example) has been reached.
More or less than three grooves may be provided, spaced apart, on the drill bit.
The grooves may be formed in any manner upon the bit, e.g. b... cutting grooves in the surface, by etching or by other means.
In some embodiment--, instead of grooves, other permanent markings may be applied, such as by the use of permanent inks which are applied to the surface of the drill bit. Alternatively, permanently affixed bands may be applied to the surface of the bit, e.g. of a contrasting type or colour metal to the metal of the drill bit shaft and which can be soldered, welded or otherwise permanently applied to the shaft.
