Abstract

An electric jig saw blade guide and support assembly consists of a support fin 1 which is secured to the body of the saw 2. The support fin connects to the free end of the blade 4 via a blade guide assembly 5 which allows the blade to move in the plane of it's reciprocating motion but prevent lateral movement. As the sawing action progresses the fin passes though the saw cut thus assisting in the maintenance of correct alignment of the saw to the workpiece. The guide assembly 5, eg a roller, may be attached to the saw-blade or the fin.

Description

Electric Jigsaw Blade Guide and Support Assembly This invention relates to an electric jigsaw blade guide and support assembly for use when making straight cuts.
Electric jigsaws are well known tools which are used to cut wood, plastic, laminate and other materials. They consist of a motor powered, open ended saw blade which reciprocates at high speed. The reciprocating action of the blade cuts the workpiece when brought into contact with it and pressure applied. The saw is usually fitted with a plate attachment which serves to provide correct alignment of the saw to the workpiece and assist the user in guiding the saw across the workpiece whilst cutting.
One of the limitations of jigsaws is that it is often difficult to obtain a consistent angle of cut in the plane of the movement of the blade. This arises from the fact that the open end of the blade is unconstrained and can therefore deflect from the required angle of alignment during use. This is particularly true when the material being cut is non-homogeneous in nature.
An example of this is wood which may have hard knots.
According to the present invention there is provided an electric jigsaw blade guide and support assembly comprising a support fin which is secured to the body of the saw or attachment thereof and connects via a blade guide assembly to the free end of the saw blade so as to allow movement of the blade in the plane of it's reciprocating motion and restrict it's lateral movement. As the sawing action progresses the support fin passes through the saw cut.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 shows the side elevation of the invention.
Figure 2 shows the front elevation of the invention.
Figure 3 shows an alternative blade guide assembly.
Figure 4 shows a second alternative blade guide assembly.
Referring to the drawing the jigsaw blade guide and support assembly consists of a thin plate support fin 1 secured to the body of the saw 2. The means by which the fin is secured to the body of the saw is not shown but for example could be bolted via a bracket to the sole plate 3. The support fin is aligned vertically so as to be in line with the saw blade 4 and the line of cut.
Attached to the free end of the saw blade is a blade guide assembly 5. This has a roller 6 which is grooved to engage the front edge 7 of the fin. During operation the roller runs up and down the front edge of the fin whilst providing lateral support to the blade. The support fin trails the blade and passes through the saw cut that is generated thereby assisting in maintaining correct alignment of the saw to the workpiece 8.
Alternative means of effectively connecting the support fin to the blade may be provided.
By way of examples: Figure 3 illustrates a roller assembly 9 secured to the support fin 1, the trailing edge of the blade 4 locates within the groove of the roller 10.
Figure 4 illustrates an arrangement whereby the free end of the blade passes between cylindrical rollers 11 contained within a housing which is secured to the support fin.

Claims (2)

  1. Claims An electric jigsaw blade guide and support assembly comprising a support fin which is secured to the body of the saw or attachment thereof and connects via a blade guide assembly to the free end of the saw blade so as to allow movement of the blade in the plane of it's reciprocating motion but restrict it's lateral movement. As the sawing action progresses the support fin passes through the saw cut.
  2. 2 An electric jigsaw blade guide and support assembly substantially as described herein with reference to figures 14 of the accompanying drawing.
