Abstract

A Newsreel Identifier comprises a ring, with a centre cutouts, attached to which is a uniquely identifiable transponder (A). The device attaches around the outside edge of the Newsreel core thereby allowing holding chucks of a reelstand to pass through. By suitable positioning of the transponder's related antenna onto the Reelstand, not only the Newsreels identity but also its rotational movement can be recorded enabling press speed and copy count values also to be recorded (Fig 5). The ring may have a transponder-sized recess to enable stacking (Fig 6).

Description

A NEWSREEL AUTOMATIC IDENTIFIER This invention relates to a Newsreel Automatic Identifier.
In the Newspaper Printing Industry newspapers are printed on paper which is supplied in the form of large reels, called Newsreels. These are similar to toilet rolls but 1.5m wide and weigh up to 1.5 tonnes each. The internal diameter of the Newsreel centre, or core is approximately 1 Ocm.
It is desirable to be able to monitor the location of a particular Newsreel and to know which reel is being used when the printing press is in use.
This allow various statistics to be assembled relating to paper quality and cost.
The invention comprises a ring with the inside cutout, and containing a built-in or surface mounted uniquely identifiable transponder. This transponder could, for example be an RF type. This ring is then fixed against the outside edge of a Newsreel's core enabling each Newsreel now to be individually identified using the appropriate receiving device.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:- Figure 1 shows in perspective a typical Newsreel. Figure 1-A shows the hollow opening to the core.
Figure 2 shows a plan view of the invention. Figure 2-A shows the mounted transponder.
Figure 3 shows the invention mounted onto the Newsreel.
Figure 4 shows the Newsreel mounted between the Reelstand pillars ready for use. The Newsreel is held in place by chucks inserted into each end of the hollow core as shown by Figure 4-A. These allow the Newsreel to freely rotate and the paper to unwind.
Figure 5 shows the Newsreel loaded onto the Reelstand and Figure 5-A the position of the invention. Each Reelstand has a permanently located antenna shown by Figure 5-B positioned to ensure reception of the transponder's signal when a reel is loaded into position. Measurement of the revolution of the reel is also possible as the transponder signal is received and lost once for each revolution of the reel. This allows press speed & printed copy count values to be recorded.
When the Newsreel is not mounted into a Reelstand a portable receiving antenna could be used to allow ad-hoc reel identification.
When the Newsreel has been fully used the ring could be removed and possibly reprogrammed with a new identity ready for re-use with another reel.
A small notch, as shown by Figure 6-A, could be incorporated within the ring into which a raised transponder could locate when rings are stacked together.

Claims (1)

1. A ring comprising a built-in or surface mounted transponder that allows automatic identification and rotational speed of a Newsreel to be recorded not only when located within a stock area but also when the Newsreel is mounted on a Reelstand.
