Abstract

A stapler for driving U-shaped staples into an object comprises a clinching mechanism (9) having two parallel wall elements (10a. 10b), which between themselves form a gap for receiving the legs of the staple which are driven through the object. An intermediate element (15), which extends in parallel with the wall elements, is arranged in the gap for dividing this into two juxtaposed partial gaps (11a, 11b). Two anvil elements (19a, 19b) are each arranged in a partial gap. The anvil elements (19a, 19b) are pivotable between a starting position and an end position for bending, when pivoting from the starting position to the end position, the projecting end portions of the legs, which are driven through the object, against the object and towards each other. The wall elements (10a and 10b) and the intermediate element (15) have cooperating guiding surfaces (14a, 16a; 14b, 16b) for guiding the ends of the staple legs into the respective partial gaps (11a, 11b).
