Abstract

A pallet comprises a horizontal board 3'', feet 2 below the board to allow fork lift access beneath the board and at least one pair of horizontal transverse members 6'' extending across the upper surface of the board. The transverse members are preferably hollow and tubular. The feet may extend upwards 7'' above the board for stacking purposes and the transverse members may be connected directly to them. The transverse members act to support the goods so that the weight of the goods transfers directly or indirectly down to the feet. A second pair of transverse members 8 may be provided perpendicular to the first pair and adapted to slide along them. The transverse members may be provided with cut outs (118, 119, Fig. 8) to snugly receive a load and reinforcing angle strips (114, Fig. 8) between their ends. Ideally the pallet is constructed from fibreboard or cardboard.

Description

Pallets The present invention relates to pallets for supporting and carrying goods using a fork lift vehicle.
Standard pallets for the above use comprise two or three normally wooden horizontal parallel members spaced apart and between which the forks of a fork lift vehicle can pass.
Nailed horizontally across the top of the horizontal members are several batons. Sometimes batons parallel to the top batons are nailed to the bottom of the horizontal members.
The goods are then strapped to the top batons. Certain goods which have a mainly cylindrical shape are difficult to support on the top batons and so have to be chocked to prevent them rolling off the pallet. This results in an expensive addition to the goods in question since the pallets are mostly broken up on finishing a single journey.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a more cost effective answer to the above problem.
A pallet according to the present invention comprises a normally horizontal disposed board, feet below the board to support the board a distance above the lowest level of the feet for fork lift access and at least a pair of transverse members extending transverse the board and upwardly from the upper surface of the board.
The transverse members act to support the goods so that the weight of the goods transfers directly or indirectly down to the feet. This enables the board to be structurally modest in strength, its main function being to keep the feet and transverse members spaced apart. A secondary function of the board is obviously for the forks of a fork lift to engage on.
The board construction reduces the weight of the pallet.
However, the weight can be even further reduced to about 4 kg for a 1.2 x 1 metre pallet as compared to a conventional wooden pallet of about 20 kg if the transverse members are hollow and preferably tubular. The weight saving is very important for air freight.
In the embodiment the transverse members are directly connected to the feet and in another embodiment there are four transverse members, opposed ones of which slide on the other two. This provides an adjustable box arrangement. The feet may extend upwards so that one pallet readily stands on another.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a first embodiment of the invention, Figure 2 is an elevation of the first embodiment, Figure 3 is a perspective view of a second embodiment of the invention, Figure 4 is an elevation of the second embodiment, Figure 5 is a perspective view of a third embodiment of the invention, Figure 6 is an elevation of the third embodiment, Figure 7 is a plan view of the third embodiment, and Figure 8 is a perspective view of a fourth embodiment of the invention similar to the second embodiment but with additions and showing an irregular goods item to be carried on this pallet.
In the first embodiment the pallet 1 comprises four outer tubular foot members 2 having an outer diameter of 131mm and an inner diameter of 120mm. These support a horizontally disposed board 3 in which there are four holes 4 through which inner tubular members 5 are inserted. Members 5 which are 116mm in diameter externally and llOmm internally continue down through the members 2 to their lower extremity. Upwardly members 5 engage with a pair of 131mum external diameter and 120mm internal diameter transverse horizontal tubes 6. The tubes 6 as well as being fixed to members 5 are also fixed at their bottoms to board 3.
The feet 2 extend some 96mm below the bottom of board 3. The board is about 800mm square and about lOmm thick.
In a second embodiment shown in Figures 3 and 4 a similar construction with similar feet 2' transverse tubes 6', board 3' and inner tubular members 5' at the bottom but tubular members 5' extend upwardly to portions 7 a total length from top to bottom of the feet of 270mm and arranged so that one such pallet may be stacked on top of another with hollow feet 2 engaging with portions 7. To enable this the upper portions 7 have an outer diameter of 116mm, whilst the inner diameter of the feet with inner tubular members is 120mm. The stackability of pallets 1' enables a box structure to be built whilst the arrangement where the feet and upper portions are equally spaced about 550mm apart enables the transverse tubes 6' to be .alternately transverse in one first direction and transverse in a second direction at right angles to the first direction.
In a third embodiment 1" shown in Figures 5 to 7 pallet 1" is stackable as in the second embodiment with feet 2" engageable with upper portions 7". The fixed transverse tubular members 6" carry a pair of sliding tubular members 8. The base has long sides 9 parallel to fixed members 6" and short sides 10 parallel to sliding members 8 so that the size of any enclosure formed by the members 6" and 8 can be adjusted as well as the bearing points of members 8 when irregular loads are to be carried.
In Figure 8 a fourth embodiment 111 is shown which has the same feet 2' as the second embodiment with upper extensions 7.
The base is not shown; a tray 112 however is shown in broken lines which has upwardly extending sides 113. The pallet 111 is formed of fibre or cardboard as in the previous examples.
In order to assist with reinforcement where fork lifting occurs, fibre board angle strips 114 are provided so as to bear on the ends 115 of transverse tubes 116. In order to accommodate an awkwardly shaped load 120, the transverse tubes 116 are optionally cut away at 118 and 119, the material of the tubes helping this. Trials have shown that sufficient strength remains in tubes 116 despite a considerable amount of cut-away material. The cut-away areas 118 and 119 ensure that load 120 sits snugly in pallet 111 and does not roll around.
