Abstract
A pivotal mounting, in particular a gear-lever mounting for motor vehicle gearboxes and transmission systems, comprising a spherical inner joint member (2) fitted within a spherical bore of an outer member (3). The outer joint member (3) is fitted with a plurality of circumferentially spaced, and axially projecting hook-like members (17) whose radial surfaces engage behind corresponding surfaces of a housing (4). The outer joint member (3) is also provided with spring elements (18) applied resiliently against corresponding surfaces of the housing (4) to firmly locate the pivotal mounting.
Description
Pivotal mounting, in particular a gear-lever
mounting for motor-vehicle gearboxes
The present invention relates to a pivotal mounting, in particular a gear-lever mounting for motor-vehicle gearboxes and transmission systems, comprising an inner joint member with a spherical outer surface and an outer joint member with a spherical bore which is provided, spaced apart circumferentially, with a plurality of axially protruding, hook-like projections which, with radial surfaces, engage behind corresponding surfaces of a housing or the like.
A pivotal mounting is known, in which loosely mounted slide members are provided between the plane side walls of a recess in the outer joint member and inner joint member, and in which to locate the gearlever mounting on a housing the outer joint member is provided, spaced apart circumferentially, with a plurality of axially protruding, hook-like projections which with radial surfaces snap behind corresponding faces of the housing (DE-OS 37 42 084).
In this known embodiment, because of the inevitable manufacturing tolerances in the individual parts, the danger arises that the outer joint member is either mounted too loosely in the housing, i.e. is displaceable in axial direction, or that the projections do not snap, or do not snap adequately, behind the corresponding surfaces of the housing so that there is no satisfactory location of the mounting in the housing.
Therefore, the object of the present invention is to devise a pivotal mounting of the type mentioned in the introduction, which ensures satisfactory and playfree axial location of the outer joint member in the housing.
According to one feature of the invention, this is achieved in that substantially axially projecting spring elements are provided on the outer joint member, which spring elements are applied resiliently with their end faces against corresponding surfaces of the housing.
According to a further feature of the invention, owing to the fact that the radial surfaces of the hook-like projections and the end faces of the spring elements are arranged to bear against surfaces of the housing which are situated opposite one another in axial direction, the outer joint member is clamped without play against the housing via the radial surfaces of the hook-like projections and the end faces of the spring elements, whereby it is reliably located axially.
Advantageously, according to a further feature of the invention, the hook-like projections and the spring elements are arranged offset with respect to one another on the circumference. Firstly, this facilitates the production of this outer joint member, which is preferably injection-moulded from plastics material, secondly, this member can be of extremely compact design.
To improve the lubrication of the mounting, in a manner known per se circumferentially spaced recesses for receiving lubricant are provided in one of the spherical surfaces of the two joint members.
Finally, for the purpose of sealing the pivotal mounting an annular groove to receive a bellows-type seal or the like is provided on the circumference of the outer joint member.
One embodiment of the invention in the form of a gear-lever mounting is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings and will be illustrated in more detail below, wherein:
FIGURE 1 shows an axial section through the pivotal mounting according to the invention; and
FIGURE 2 shows a plan view of the pivotal mounting according to Figure 1, with the housing partly cut away.
The pivotal mounting in the form of a gear-lever mounting comprises a inner joint member 2 connected to a rod 1 and an outer joint member 3 which, for example, is made from plastics material and which is secured in a housing 4 preferably produced from sheet metal.
For improved assembly and for play-free guidance, in a known manner, starting from the end face 5, the outer joint member 3 is provided with an annular recess 6 and with a plurality of radially continuous slots 7 which are arranged spaced apart circumferentially and which extend in axial direction beyond the bearing centre and separate inner tongues 8 and outer tongues 9. One or more axially extending ribs 10 are disposed respectively on the inner tongues 8 and leave free a clearance 11 with respect to the outer tongues 9.
To secure the outer joint member 3 in a bore 12 of the pot-shaped housing 4 there are provided on the outer joint member 3 three circumferentially spaced hook-like projections 17 protruding axially through corresponding slots 13 in the bottom 14 of the housing 4 and bearing with their radial surfaces 15 against corresponding surfaces 16 of the housing 4.
Additionally, in the embodiment illustrated by way of example, spring elements 18 are arranged offset on the outer joint member 3, which also protrude axially and are applied resiliently with their end faces 19 against the surface 20 of the housing 4 situated axially opposite the surface 16 of the housing 4. In this way the outer joint member 3 is clamped against the housing 4 by the radial surfaces 15 of the projections 17 and the end faces 19 of the spring elements 18 and is located axially without play.
To improve the lubrication of the bearing the spherical inner surface 21 of the outer joint member 3 is provided with circumferentially spaced recesses 22 which serve to receive lubricant. For the purpose of sealing the gear-lever mounting a bellows-type seal 23, only a small part of which is indicated, is provided which engages in an annular groove 24 of the outer joint member 3.
