Abstract
A quilted material comprises at least one fabric layer (1,3) and a wadding layer (2) stitched together by stitching forming real or invented words. These words may include the name or trade mark of the manufacturer and may be arranged in straight or undulating lines. The invention includes garments made of such materials.
Description
Improvements relating to quilted materials
The invention relates to textile and similar materials, and, in particular, to quilted materials.
Quilted materials are used for many purposes, including, inter alia, in the manufacture of clothing. They are manufactured by superposing a layer of sheet material, which may be a textile fabric and which will provide the outer surface of the quilted material, on a layer of softer, bulky wadding and stitching the layers together with spaced lines of stitching. Optionally a second layer of fabric or similar material may be used, the wadding being sandwiched between the two layers. The third layer is not often required in the manufacture of clothing, since the garment will generally have its own separate lining.
Hitherto the stitching has most usually been in sets of spaced straight lines crossing each other at right angles, thereby dividing the quilted area into squares or rectangles. The present invention, which is defined in the claims appended hereto, proposes a a modified arrangement of stitching.
The invention will be described further with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which
Figure 1 is a view of a portion of material according to the
invention, partly broken away to show its constituent layers,
Figure 2 is a view of a portion of material according to the
invention with an alternative pattern, and
Figures 3 and 4 show motifs which could form the centrepiece
of a pattern in material according to the invention.
Referring first to Figure 1, a quilted material comprises a layer of fabric, 1, superposed on a layer of wadding, 2. A third fabric layer, 3, may be provided if required. The fabric layer or layers may be of natural or synthetic textiles, or the outer layer 1 may be of plastic material. The wadding layer 2 may be chosen from a wide variety of light bulky materials, including textiles, plastic foam sheeting and felt.
The stitching which unites the layers is patterned into words, repeated to form long lines of text. These lines are arranged in parallel sets crossing at right angles, so that the overall effect of the quilting is a pattern of squares.
Figure 2 shows an alternative pattern for the stitching. In this case the stitching forms a series of decorative undulating lines, arranged generally parallel to one another. The wording constituting the lines may contain information, such as the name or trade mark of the manufacturer of, or a trader in, the material.
Figures 3 and 4 show single motifs of lettered stitching. These could be surrounded by an outer frame of stitching to form a quilted panel.
Claims (6)
1. A quilted material comprising a layer of sheet material and a wadding layer united by stitching, the stitching being arranged to form one or more real or invented words.
2. A quilted material according to claim 1 in which the words include a name or trade mark.
3. A quilted material according to claim 1 or claim 2 in which the stitching is arranged in generally parallel straight or undulating lines.
4. A quilted material according to claim 1, 2 or 3 in which the lines of stitching cross one another.
5. A quilted material according to any preceding claim including a second sheet material layer, the wadding being sandwiched between the two layers.
6. A garment made from a quilted material according to any preceding claim.
