Description
1 2313640 CONNECTING FLANGE The present invention relates to a connecting
flange for a pressure connection or the like, such as an hydraulic line, the connecting flange comprising a flange plate and a connecting member, in which, the flange plate is provided with an aperture in the region of the connecting member and with fixing elements, preferably in the form of holes, disposed radially outwardly from the connecting member.
The flange plate and the connecting member are integral, that is they are connected together in an inseparable manner. With known connecting flanges these two components are often welded together.
Such connecting flanges are used in hydraulic systems of various kinds. The flanges are used for example as connecting elements between the pressurised fluid outlet of an hydraulic pump and a pressure line for the hydraulic fluid. In this case, the flange plate is screwed to the hydraulic pump by way of the flying elements which are generally in the form of holes. The pressure line is inserted in the connecting member and is usually secured by soldering.
With known connecting flanges, cracks or breaks frequently arise as a result of movements in service of the pressure line relative to the connecting flange. Such cracks or breaks usually occur at the transition between the flange plate and the connecting member. These relative movements are caused for example by pressure fluctuations and pressure surges in the hydraulic fluid within the pressure line.
The object of the present invention is to provide a connecting flange which is simple to manufacture and which exhibits improved operating reliability compared to known connecting flanges.
According to the present invention there is provided a connecting flange comprising a flange plate and a connecting member, the flange plate being provided with an aperture in the region of the connecting member and with fixing elements spaced radially outwardly from the connecting member, wherein the connecting member has a wall thickness which changes around the circumference thereof such that the wall thickness is less in the region of a fixing element than in the region intermediate two fixing elements.
2 The partial increase in the wall thickness increases the bending stiffness of the connecting member and at the same time improves strength in the region of the transition from the connecting member to the flange plate. The wall thickness, which is increased only a small amount if at all in the region of the fixing elements, makes it possible to arrangeffle fixing elements in the same way as in known connecting flanges.- In one embodiment of the invention the flange plate is provided with a plurality of fixing elements and the external contour of the connecting member is substantially polygonal, having a number of sides corresponding to the number of fixing elements. The connecting member is arranged so that the corners of the polygon are in each case located in the region intermediate two fixing elements. It should be noted that embodiments in which the corners of the connecting member are rounded or chamfered, for example for manufacturing reasons, are also regarded as polygonal.
The flange plate may be provided with four flying elements and the external contour of the connecting member may be substantially square.
The internal contour of the connecting member may be substantially circular. This ensures that a conventional pressure line can be inserted into the connecting member and then soldered in place to form a pressuretight seal.
The flange plate may be formed integrally with the connecting member. Thus the connecting flange according to the invention can be manufactured in one piece, for example as a casting or by machining. This avoids the disadvantageous effects of notches which might otherwise be found, for example at a weld seam. In addition, the number of the components needed to manufacture the connecting flange and the number of working operations can be reduced.
A stop may be formed in the aperture formed in the flange plate. The stop determines the depth to which a pressure line can be inserted into the connecting flange through the connecting member. The stop may be positioned intermediate opposing faces of the flange plate, that is located on the inside of the aperture. As a result, at least some of the forces acting on the pressure line can be transmitted directly to the flange plate.
3 For a better understanding of the present invention and to show more clearly how it may be carried into effect reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of one embodiment of a connecting flange according to the present invention; and Figure 2 is a plan view of the connecting flange shown in Figure 1.
Figure 1 shows that a connecting flange according to the present invention comprises a flange plate 1 and a connecting member 2 which are integral with each other. As can be seen from Figure 2, the external contour of the connecting member 2 is substantially square, the corners of the square being rounded or chamfered for manufacturing reasons. A fixing element in the form of a hole 3 is provided opposite each of the four sides of the square.
The flange plate 1 can be secured, for example to a pressure connection of a hydraulic pump (not shown), by means of the holes 3. An 0-ring (not shown) can be positioned in an annular groove 5 provided in the connecting face of the flange plate 1 to seal the join between the flange plate 1 and the pressure connection. An aperture 4 is provided through the flange plate 1 and connects the pressure connection to the connecting member 2. In the illustrated embodiment, the internal contours of the aperture 4 and of the connecting member 2 are substantially circular with the diameter of a part of the aperture 4 being somewhat less than the diameter of the connecting member 2 so as to provide a stop shoulder 6 intermediate the connecting member 2 and the aperture 4. Thus, a pressure line can be inserted into the connecting member 2 and the flange plate 1 as far as the stop 6 and can then be soldered in place to form a pressure- tight seal. It should be noted that the stop shoulder 6 in the illustrated embodiment is positioned intermediate the opposing faces of the flange plate 1, although this is not essential.
The external contour of the connecting member 2 is shown by a dashed line in the plan view of Figure 2 and makes it clear that the corners of the square are disposed in the areas intermediate the holes 3.
4 The associated increase in the cross-section of the connecting member 2 in the regions of the corners of the square increases the stiffness and strength, not only of the connecting member 2, but also at the transition between the connecdng member and the flange plate 1.
