Abstract
A windscreen wiper assembly drive head comprises aligned passageways 3 formed for a pivot pin for a wiper assembly. The passageways 3 are defined either by deformed portions 4 in each side wall 5 of the body 1, or by separate flanged bearing bushes 14 inserted in the side walls. Alternatively a complete single sleeve for the pivot pin can be provided between the two side walls, with the ends of the sleeve fitting into aligned holes in the side walls. The bearing surfaces can be coated with friction-reduction material.
Description
ImDrovements relations to Bearina Mounting There are many situations where a bearing is needed in a body for a pivot pin which is to be connected to another member. A particular instance is the interconnection of a drive head to a wiper arm of a windscreen wiper assembly.
The bearing mounting needs to be designed to support the expected load.
According to the present invention there is provided a bearing mounting for a pivot pin located between side walls of a U-shaped cross-section body, the bearing being provided by sleeve portions extending inwardly of the body from openings in the side walls.
The sleeve portions provide a robust mounting for the pivot pin in such a U-shaped body. Inwardly deformed portions of the side walls could be shaped to define the sleeve portions. Alternatively the sleeve portions may advantageously comprise the two ends of a continuous sleeve insert which is set into the openings in the side walls. In this instance it is desirable to provide that the central section of the sleeve insert is of larger external diameter than the opening in at least one of the side walls. This helps to ensure that the separate sleeve insert will be held in place between the two side walls. One or both ends of the sleeve insert can be peened over on the outer face of the relevant side wall. Another possibility is to provide individual bearings into the openings in each side wall, these bearings having enlarged heads which will space an outer member from the body.
It is preferred that the inner surfaces of the sleeve portions should be coated with a friction reduction material.
The invention may be performed in various ways and a preferred embodiment will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a drive head of a windscreen wiper assembly;
Figure 2 is an underneath view of such a drive head showing a bearing mounting according to the present invention;
Figure 3 is an enlarged view of part of the bearing mounting shown in Figure 2;
Figures 4 and 5 are vertical sections through alternative forms of bearing mounting for a drive head of the type shown in Figure 1; and
Figures 6 and 7 are perspective and underneath views respectively of another form of bearing mounting of the invention.
The windscreen wiper assembly drive head 1 shown in
Figure 1 will be mounted onto a drive shaft of a motor by means of a shaped recess 2. At the other end of the drive head aligned passageways 3 are formed for a pivot pin for a windscreen wiper assembly. As shown in Figures 2 and 3 the passageways 3 are defined by deformed portions 4 in each side wall 5 of the body 1. These create sleeve-like members in which a pivot pin for a wiper arm can be mounted.
In the alternative arrangements shown in Figures 4 and 5 a complete single sleeve 6 is provided between the two side walls 5. In Figure 4 this sleeve 6 fits into aligned holes 7,8. The hole 8 is of smaller diameter than the main dimension of the sleeve 6 so that the narrowed portion 9 only of the sleeve 6 will fit into the hole 8. This provides a butt stop 10 of the sleeve against the wall 5.
In the arrangement shown in Figure 5 narrowed portions 9 are formed at both ends of the sleeve 6 and these fit into the openings 7 and 8 during part of the forming procedure for the drive head 1. Thus as the walls 5 are bent upwardly by a forming tool the sleeve 6 is held in position so that the ends 9 slide into the openings 8. This holds the sleeve 6 securely between the side walls 5. If desired an external bearing washer 11 can be provided. It is also possible to peen over the ends of the sleeve 6, as shown at 12, for added security. In all the arrangements the inner face 13 of the sleeve members 4 and 6 are coated with a friction reduction material.
In the arrangement shown in Figures 6 and 7 the bearings mounting is provided by a pair of "top hat" bearings 14 which fit into the passageways 3. These bearings 14 provide the mounting for the pivot pin which will pass through the drive head 1 and a wiper arm which will be located outside the drive head 1. The enlarged heads 15 of the bearings 14 space the wiper arm away from the drive head 1 and thus prevent damage to paint work when the two parts move relative to one another. In this arrangement a locating pin 16 is provided for a hook at the end of a locating spring. The hook at the end of the spring will be held centrally by a pair of side wings 17 of the drive head 1.
