Abstract

An attachment for a ladder 7 that increases the stability of the ladder 7, particularly against sideways movement, by placing support members 2 under a horizontal surface on the wall, eg a widow sill 8, and thus jams the ladder 7 between the ground and the window sill 8. The attachment comprises support members 2, pads 6 for engaging a surface and a handle mechanism 4 for operating the support members. The handle 4 operates the support members 2 simultaneously via a spindle 3 that is attached to a mounting plate 1. A ratchet mechanism locks the support members 2 in position. The spindle 3 may have a spool 9 located on it for storing a cable. This cable can be used to secure the ladder to other objects to increase the ladder's stability.

Description

Ladder Safety Device.
This invention relates to an anti-slip ladder lock.
Ladders are constantly in use by a wide variety of people for a wide variety of tasks. For example, Window Cleaners use a ladder usually placed against a window sill or ledge whilst, a builder may use his ladder against such things as scaffolding, soffet board, the roof of a house or at window sills.
The common denominator is that the ladder must rest against items such as a window sill, ledge, soffet, roof or scaffolding.
This invention provides a ladder lock comprising of a ratchet operated set of feet which anchor the ladder solidly to the object against which it is leaning. Pads are attached to the feet to allow for uneven surfaces and prevent movement in any direction. Where the feet are not suitable to hold the ladder securely an accessory cable spool attaches to the spindle to provide secure locking for most other uses. The device remains fixed to the ladder at all times and therefore is always available when the ladder is to be used.
An example of the device will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig 1 shows an ordanary ladder 7 resting in this case against a window sill or ledge 8 Fig 2 shows the anti-slip device complete with cable spool 9.
Fig 3 shows the device fitted to a ladder, 7 in this case without the cable spool 9 .The device can be used with or without the cable spool 9 depending on the need.
Fig 4 shows device fitted to a ladder 7 in this case with the cable spool 9.
Referring to Fig 2, the anti-slip ladder lock comprises of a spindle 3 with or without cable spool 9, attached to mounting plates 1. There are two feet 2 attached to the spindle, these will be fitted inside the frame of the ladder. One end of the spindle 3 is attached to a ratchet mechanism 4 which operates the feet 2 or spool 9 and locks or holds the ladder into position.
Referring to Fig 3, when using the device to secure the ladder to a window sill or ledge, the ratchet handle 4 is drawn back toward the user. This operation rotates the spindle, 3 which in turn pulls the feet 2 with pads 6 upward to the under-side of the sill or ledge 8 causing the ladder 7 to be jammed or locked between the ground and the sill or ledge 8 as indicated by the arrows in this drawing. The user may then carry out his task with the ladder safely held in position.
To move the ladder, the ratchet handle 4 is released allowing the feet 2 to lower, therefore unlocking the ladder 7 from its position.
Referring to Fig 4 when using the device with a cable spool 9 attached. The cable from the spool can be used to secure the ladder 7 to other objects. For this to happen, securing pins 10 locking the feet 2 to the spindle 3 can be easily removed allowing the spindle 3 to fully rotate. This being necessary to wind in excess cable with the ratchet handle 4 and hold the ladder tightly to whatever object the cable is attached.
To move the ladder the ratchet handle is released allowing the cable to be released, therefore releasing the ladder from its position.
