Description
DETACHABLE TAPPING TEE
This invention relates to a detachable tapping tee.
Polyelhylene saddle tees are in every day use in certain fields of the pipe mainlaying industry. They are electrically fused to polyethylene pipe. A cutter is then screwed down to cut a hole in the pipe, and then raised to allow a commodity to now through the outlet. Saddle tees are used to supply the commodity to most households. However, saddle tees are also used for pressure point readings, by-pass supplies, and venting. After these purposes are served the cutter is then screwed back down into the pipe to act as a plug, so that once used, are capped off are of no further use.
According to the present invention there is provided a detachable tee which comprises of an electrofusion saddle base, and a detachable tee. After completion of use the saddle base is capped off with a threaded cap, and the tee is removed to be reused.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows in perspective the electrofusion saddle base with the detachable tee in position.
Figures 2 and 3 illustrates the separation of the two components.
Figure 4 shows a cross sectional view of the detachable tee with screw down cap.
Figure 5 shows cross sectional views of the electrofusion saddle base, cutter, and screw down cap.
Referring to the drawings the electrofusion saddle base 1 is fused onto a main carrier pipe of whichever size the saddle base is manufactured for. This comprises of a saddle base, cutter 5, and a cap 3. This can then be tested according to current procedure. The detachable tee 2 is then screwed into place and aligned using the indicators 4. The indicators ensure that the internal threads are in formation to allow the cutter to be raised and lowered. The two parts are made airtight by a gasket 6 which is positioned in the bottom of the detachable tee. Once the main has been cut to allow a flow, the cutter is raised past the outlet point. The cap is then screwed on to the detachable tee to secure a complete seal. The cap also has a gasket. Once all tasks have ben completed the cap is removed and the cutter is lowered back into the saddle base and acts as a plug. The cap is then screwed onto the saddle base to ensure a seal is complete. The detachable tee no longer protrudes from the main.
Claims (4)
1 A detachable tapping tee made from polyethylene, comprising of a threaded electrofusion saddle base, a detachable tee, a cutter, a cap, and two gaskets.
2 A detachable tapping tee as claimed in claim 1 whereby means are provided on base for the detachable tee to screwed on and off as required.
3 A detachable tapping tee as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 whereby means are provided for the base to be capped off by means of a threaded cap.
4 A detachable tapping tee substantially as described herein with reference to figures 1 to 5 of the accompanying drawing.
