Abstract

A fire door comprising a peripheral frame 10, with facing panels 26,28 enclosing a door cavity 12, across which at least one fire resistant member 34 is positioned, spaced from one or both facing panels 26,28. The fire resistant members are mounted in grooves in the frame 40, which can be fitted with metal channels to add to the door's resistance to buckling in a fire. Also disclosed is that the frame members can be made from two or more parts side by side, joined by a tongue and groove arrangement 22.

Description

IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO FIRE RESISTING DOORS The present invention concerns improvements in or relating to fire resisting doors.
A popular door for use in domestic and commercial situations comprises an inner frame faced on both sides with a sheet material, for example, plywood. A door with only these components is effectively hollow and does not present sufficient resistance to a fire passing through a doorway closed by the door. As a result, it is common practice to fill the space defined by the frame and the facing sheets entirely full of a fire resistant material and whereas this increases the fire resistance of the door to an acceptable value, it also increases the weight of the door. The weight increase is such that normally two operatives are required to safely handle and hang to door in a door frame. The ironmongery for a door of this nature, for example, hinges, automatic door closers etc. have to be sufficiently robust to cope with the increased weight.
These handling requirements and ironmongery requirements are disadvantageous and it is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate these disadvantages.
According to the present invention there is provided a door comprising a peripheral framework surrounding a door cavity, facing sheets on each side of the framework enclosing the cavity and a fire resistant member extending over the cavity with an air space on at least one side thereof.
Preferably the fire resistant member is mounted by the framework and spaced from each spacing sheet. Alternatively it is mounted across at least that part of the inner face of at least one of said sheets which enclose the cavity. Preferably it is mounted across those parts of the inner faces of both sheets which enclose the cavity.
Preferably the framework is fabricated from wood and it may comprise two side members, a top member and a bottom member. The side members may indude two components connected in side-by-side relationship by a tongue and groove or any other suitable joint arrangement.
Preferably the framework includes one or more cross members extending across the cavity.
Preferably the facing sheets are formed from plywood, hardboard, pressed sheet or any other suitable material.
Preferably the fire resistant member is formed from fire resistant board, paper or fabric or cloth or any product treated to give it fire resistant properties.
Preferably the fire resistant member is mounted in grooves formed in the face of the framework surrounding the cavity. The grooves may include metal channel members fitted therein.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:- Fig. 1 shows an elevation of a door in its frame; Fig. 2 shows an elevation of the door with a facing panel removed; Fig. 3 shows a cross-sectional view taken on the line A-A of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 shows a cross-sectional view taken on the line B-B of Fig. 1.
A door comprises a rectangular framework 10 formed from a suitable softwood material and surrounds a door cavity 12. The frame comprises two side members 14,16, a top rail 18 and a bottom rail 20. Conveniently the sides and rails are formed from an inner and outer component arranged in side-by-side relationship and joined by a tongue and groove joint 22. The top rail can be joined to the side rails by any convenient means, for example, nails or other fasteners, mortise and tenon, adhesive or tongue and groove joints.
The frame-work member includes also a cross member 24 extending between the two side members.
The door is provided with front and rear facing sheets 26,28 which are, conveniently, of plywood, hardboard or any other suitable sheet material.
The door furniture, for example, hinges 30 and handles 32 are conventional and as they do not form part of the present invention they will not be described herein.
A fire resistant member in the form of a fire resistant board 34 is mounted by the frame 10 within the cavity 12 and extends over the entire area of the cavity.
An insulating sheet 36 extends over the cavity being attached either to the fire resistant member 34 or the inner face of each facing sheet 26, 28 or both. The insulating sheet 36 is of aluminium foil is fixed by any suitable fire resistant means preferably to both faces of the fire member 34.
The fire resistant member is spaced from the inner faces of the facing sheets 26, 28 so that, essentially, the door remains hollow.
The fire resistant member 34 is formed from any suitable material and may, for example, be an intumescent, refractory or ceramic board, intumescent, refractory or ceramic paper, intumescent, refractory or ceramic fabric or cloth. The fire resistant member may be formed from a suitable material coated with a fire resistant coating. It is relatively lightweight and does not materially add to the overall weight of the door. It is located in grooves 40 formed in the framework. Conveniently it may comprise two portions, the joint 42 between each portion being masked by the cross member 24.
Various modifications could be made without departing from the scope of the invention, for example the location of the fire resistant member can be moved from the central plane of the door to against the inner face of one but preferably both of the facing sheets. Aluminium foil or any other suitable sheet-like insulating material is applied over the inwardly facing faces of the or each fire retardant member in this modification.
The grooves 40 may have metal channels (not shown) fitted therein.
These metal channels receive the edges of the members 34 but also serve to reinforce the frame and reduce the tendency of the frame to buckle in a fire.
In a further modification the frame-work can take any suitable form, for example it could be fabricated from square section tubular metal. It is preferable that the framework is rectangular and of sufficiently lightweight construction to provide adequate strength for the door for a self-weight reduced to a minimum.
A modified fire resistant member could be provided by a glass cloth, which in addition could be coated with all intumescent material.
In a further modification the side members, top and bottom rails of the doors could be made up from three or more components arranged in side by side relationship and joined by joints other than tongue and groove joints, said alternative joints having a contact surface over greater than a face-to-face flat joint.
The groove for receiving the fire resistant member could be substituted by a rebate and an infill bead.
In a further modification the space between the fire resistant member and the facing sheets could be filled with a lightweight fire resistant and perhaps also insulating material.
