Abstract

To enable the paper of a printed form or stationery set (which may be uncoated paper with an open grain structure) to serve as a backing sheet for an adhesive label 22, the paper is coated with a primer 28 by dry offset printing. The primer coating is a non water-based resin composition eg a glycol based acrylic resin. A coating of a release varnish, e.g. a UV-curable silicone composition, is then applied by offset printing. After curing, a hot melt adhesive 26 is applied over the varnish. Finally, a label web portion 24 is applied over the adhesive area.

Description

Label Assemblies The present invention relates to label assemblies, and particularly to assemblies of forms and removable adhesive labels.
Conventionally, a self-adhesive label assembly involves a label web bearing adhesive, and a backing sheet. The backing sheet must allow the label, with its adhesive, to be peeled away. Thus it may have been coated with a silicone release agent.
We wished to be able to provide a label assembly in which the backing sheet was provided by part of a printed form. This would be convenient and lead to efficient use of resources. The form could have a printed portion which served as the backing sheet. If this bore an opaque label, then the printing would be concealed until the label was peeled away. This feature could be made use of in various ways.
However a standard form, of the kind normally processed by a laser printer, is made from an uncoated paper, typically wood-free, with an open grain structure. If a silicone release agent is applied to such a paper, it sinks in, and does not provide a reliable release coat.
It is known to apply a release liner coat to a paper prior to application of a silicone layer. However we have found that application to uncoated papers of conventional release liner coats, which are water based, tends to cause the paper to curl up. This is unsightly, and causes great problems in handling and processing.
We have now found that use of an oil-based, or essentially non-aqueous, material to provide a release liner can ameliorate or solve such problems.
Thus in a first aspect the invention provides paper (particularly paper of uncoated type and/or having an open grain structure) to which has been applied a primer coat of a non water-based resin composition. A release varnish may have been applied over the primer coat. This may be a silicone-based UV release varnish.
In a second aspect the invention provides a printed form having a surface portion which bears, successively, a primer coat of a non water-based resin composition, a release varnish, and an adhesive label.
In a third aspect the invention provides a method of producing a paper or form according to the first or second aspect, comprising applying the primer coat to paper using a dry printing process (e.g. a dry offset printing process).
Subsequently a release varnish may be applied over the primer coat, e.g. using either a dry or a wet offset printing process. The varnish may be UV-cured. A layer of adhesive may be applied over the varnish, and a label web may then be applied to the adhesive.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 is a plan view of a form/label assembly embodying the invention; and Fig. 2 is a schematic section on II-II in Fig. 1.
The illustrated embodiment is a continuous stationery set, divided by tear lines 10 into individual form sections 12. Each of these is divided by longitudinal tear lines 14 into separable panels and marginal strips 16 with sprocket holes. As indicated schematically, all of the panels are printed with indicia 18. The right hand panel 20 of each form bears on its right-hand portion a removable selfadhesive label 22. As can be seen from Fig. 2, a label is constituted by a label web 24 (which is generally of paper), and a layer of adhesive 26. The paper of the main form sheet bears in the region of the label a layer of release liner 28.
To produce the illustrated assembly, an uncoated paper web is formed into a printed continuous stationery set, in a generally conventional way. This is then fed through a dry offset printing unit, where the release coat is applied by printing with an unpigmented medium consisting of water reducible glycol based acrylic resin. The base coated material is then passed to a second offset printing station where a UV release varnish is applied. This is an unpigmented medium consisting of acrylated prepolymers, monomers, diluting oligomers, a photo-initiator, and reactive silicone. The coat is then UV-cured. The material then passes through a glue station where hot melt adhesive is applied over the release varnish. Finally, individual label web portions 22 are applied over the adhesive areas on the individual forms.
