Abstract

A folded sheet plastic cover that fits over a car seat buckle and in so doing, due to a cover plate C, prevents the buckle release mechanism from being pressed with the use of fingers. A key or pen can pushed through the aperture D by the supervisor of the person who is strapped into the seat. In an emergency, a case of fire or accident, when panic may set in, the cover can be torn apart and will fracture at E. The removal of the buckle and straps is then normal.

Description

Safety Buckle Cover for a Car Seat This invention relates to a safety buckle cover that prevents inquisitive young children from releasing themselves from a car seat. The principles of manufacture and operation have potential that reach further than this range of activities and could be adapted for use on many other forms of buckles used in a variety of fields.
Car safety is a topical problem area and this invention concentrates on young children, disabled adults or adults or children with learning difficulties, who are able to exit from a harness in a seat by pushing the button and releasing the straps. The child or other persons mentioned above would then be free to move in the rear or front compartment of the car therefore causing a safety hazard. The child or other person is often accompanied by only one supervising adult and this exacerbates the safety hazard for both the passenger and supervisor.
The safety buckle cover that has been invented, consists of a folded acrylic shape that surrounds the fastening buckle. It offers an opening for each of the strap connections and a cover that prevents the child, or other person, from having access to the release button. The aperture through which the supervisor gains access to the button is small but varies in shape to accommodate items such as keys, pens and pencils. It does not allow access to fingers. In the event of an emergency situation where the supervisor may be in a state of panic e.g. in an accident or fire, the surface of the invention can be lifted and torn apart by any rescuer. The device breaks and allows release of the buckle.
A specific embodiment of the invention will be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing: Fig. 1. Shows a 3D drawing of the buckle cover.
Fig.2. Shows a front 2D view of the buckle shown in position surrounded by the cover.
Fig. 3.Shows a 2D view of the assembled buckle and cover showing the aperture through which the supervisor may gain easy access to the button.
Fig.4. Shows a 2D view of the cover illustrating the fracture line that provides the emergency safety feature when the cover is torn off to gain access to the button.
REF. FIG. 1.
Shows the overall shape and form of the safety cover. It is produced from flat acrylic sheet that is bent into shape. It allows access for the buckle body and the two strap fastenings A and B.
REF. FIG. 2.
The front elevation of the buckle and cover shows how the buckle is housed when fully assembled.
REF. FIG. 3.
Having placed the buckle inside the cover and assembled the straps to secure the system, the buckle can only be released normally by the supervisor using a key shaped to fit the aperture D.
REF. HG. 4.
If in an emergency or panic situation where normal operation of the system, through the use of a key or pen or similar object, is not possible the top of the cover C can be torn off. The possible scenario for this action may be in cases of fire, accident or a combination of both.

Claims (5)

  1. Claims
NO. 1. That the invention, when in place over the buckle, prevents young children, disabled people and or people who require any sort of supervision due to impairment, being able to press the release button on the safety buckle.
    NO.
  2. 2. That the device has been developed alongside tests that indicate that the shape and form of the device could be changed to suite a variety of buckle types, shapes and forms. The size of the cover can be adjusted to fit the buckle requirements.
    NO.
  3. 3. That the shape of the aperture D through which keys, pens etc can be pushed to release the buckle, can be varied to suite the requirements governed by the use and the user.
    NO.
  4. 4. That the material used to manufacture the device is acrylic sheet and, as a thermoforming plastic, supports the claims 1 and 2.
    NO.
  5. 5. That the device is so designed that in an emergency, where access through the normal key operation is prohibited through panic or circumstances such as fire or accident causing panic; the device cover plate C can be torn off by the supervisor, therefore allowing easy access to the standard release mechanism
