Abstract

A quill has an outer casing 1, ball races and spindle. The outer casing 1 is machined to accept a modified drive fork 4 secured to the quill via bolt holes (Fig.5). A sleeve 5 is inserted inside the quill to give added strength. Two high tensile bolts 6 pass through the drive fork 4, outer casing 1 and engage in the sleeve 5, thus securely mounting the drive fork 4 to the quill outer casing 1.

Description

MACHINE TOOL 'OUILL' This innovation relates to Quills, e.g. those found on Bridgeport Series I BRJ/BR2J2, King Rich KRV/PRO 2000 and 3000 series and other Milling Machines of similar construction.
Traditionally these types of Milling Machines have been supplied to industry as 'manually operated machines' but have, in recent times been made available with computerised numerical controls to the 'X', T' and 'Z' axies. Whilst the 'X' and 'Y' axies lent themselves to modification for the acceptance of new types of drive mechanisms, the 'Z' axis however, because of its configuration, proved much more difficult to modify. This has resulted in a weakness to the 'Z' axis drive mountings with subsequent breakdown of machine tools.
A specific embodiment of this innovation will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 to 8.
Fig. 1 Shows a Quill typical of the type being modified.
Fig. 2 Shows an unmodified Drive Fork typical of the type in common use.
Fig. 3 Shows an unmodified Quill and Drive Fork. The Drive Fork is shown mounted in line with current practice.
Fig. 4 Shows the Sleeve.
Fig. 5 Shows the modified Drive Fork.
Fig. 6 Shows the modified assembly of the Quill, Drive Fork and Sleeve.
Fig. 7 Shows an outline of the type of Milling Machines under consideration.
Fig. 8 Outlines the conventional understanding of X, 'r and 'Z' axies movements.
Referring to drawing Fig. 1, it can be seen that there is but one mounting hole for the Drive Fork and that the threaded area for the securing bolt is very shallow.
Referring to Drawing Fig. 2, it can be seen that the Fork to Quill mating surface is short with a radius to suit the curvature ofthe Quill.
Referring to drawing Fig. 3, here is shown a typically current method of mounting the Drive Fork to the Quill.
Referring to drawing Fig. 4, this shows the Sleeve which is inserted inside the Quill to give added strength to the mounting area.
Referring to drawing Fig. 5, this shows a modified Drive Fork with a longer flat mating face and two bolt holes to give added strength to the mounting.
Referring to drawing Fig. 6, this shows the modified assembly of the Drive Fork, Quill and Sleeve. It will be noted that the Drive Fork is now embedded in the outer casing of the Quill which has been machined to provide a flat mating face for the Drive Fork.
Referring to drawing Fig. 7, this shows an outline of one type of Machine Tool which uses a Quill to impart up and down movement to the cutting tool.
Referring to drawing Fig. 8, this shows the accepted understanding of'X', 'Y' and 'Z' movements in the horizontal and vertical planes of Machine Tools.

Claims (5)

1. A Quill modified in such a manner as to provide a strong and secure method for the dismountable attachment of a drive mechanism and lead screw, which in turn imparts up and down movements to the Quill in the conventionally accepted plane of'Z' axis movement on Machine Tools.
2. A Sleeve so constructed as to allow insertion inside the body of a dismantled Quill thus providing extra purchase power to the bolts used in the dismountable attachment of drive mechanisms.
3. A drive mechanism, as claimed in Claim 1, modified in such a manner as to allow strong and secure dismount able attachment to a Quill or similar mechanisms.
4. A Quill or similar mechanisms, as claimed in Claim 1, modified in such a manner as to allow secure dismountable attachment of drive mechanisms.
5. A Sleeve, as claimed in Claim 2, to give added strength to the otherwise thin outer casing of a Quill or similar mechanisms.
