Abstract

A system for mounting a vehicle seat cushion 2 in a vehicle 6 comprises first mounting means provided at one or more fixing points in the vehicle 6 and a seat cushion 2 which is provided with second mounting means. The mounting means are interengageable to releasably secure the seat cushion 2 in the vehicle 6. The system allows a vehicle to be manufactured or altered to have a preferred seat layout. The seat cushion may for example, be one carrying an integral childs seat 10. The fixings may be conventional latches, actuated by pressing down on the cushion.

Description

A MOUNTING SYSTEM The present invention relates to a system for mounting a seat cushion in a vehicle, notably a motor car. The invention also provides a seat cushion for use in the system.
Typically cushions or squabs for motor vehicle seats are fixed in design and common to all models in a vehicle range. A customer who has elected to purchase a particular model of vehicle therefore has no real choice over the design of seating in the vehicle, although some choice may be available with regard to the colour of the seats.
A design of vehicle known as a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) allows different seats to be located in standard floor mounted fixing points. This allows a customer to obtain a preferred seat layout. The flexibility in location of seats in an MPV is not possible in a normal motor car.
Other known vehicles have integrated child booster seats in the rear bench. This adds to the cost of production of the vehicle, and only provides a single booster seat in a predetermined location.
Commonly, baby seats are mounted in a vehicle using standard seat belts provided with the vehicle. These seats are often not correctly fitted in the vehicle, rendering the baby seats potentially unsafe in a vehicle collision or other accident. A possible solution to the problem of fitting baby seats is to use an ISO baby seat fixing mechanism; however this mechanism is quite heavy and needs to be built into the vehicle. The mechanism is therefore not suitable for modifying standard vehicles.
According to the present invention there is provided a system for mounting a seat cushion in a vehicle, the system comprising first mounting means provided at one or more fixing points in the vehicle and a seat cushion which is provided with second mounting means, the first and second mounting means being interengageable to releasably secure the seat cushion in the vehicle.
Different designs of seat cushion may be available, each having suitable second mounting means so that seat cushions may readily be interchanged with one another in the vehicle.
Preferably each seat location in the vehicle is provided with the first mounting means at standard fixing points, so that any one of a range of different designs of seat cushion may be mounted in the vehicle in any preferred seat location.
The system allows a vehicle to be manufactured or modified to have a seat arrangement specified by the user.
Preferably the mounting means may be engaged by positioning the seat cushion relative to the first mounting means, and pressing down on the seat cushion.
Thus if the cushion is correctly fitted, application of weight to the seat cushion will secure it.
The first and second mounting means may be standard latching mechanisms, and many suitable mechanisms are known in the art. Preferably the seat cushion is releasable by the operation of a one or two point locking lever.
Many different designs of seat cushion are possible within the scope of the invention. Non-limiting examples of possible seats are given below.
Standard seat cushions, similar to those conventionally used in most motor vehicles, may be used. They may be removed if extra stowage space is required or, in the case of rear seats, tilted to allow the seat back to be folded down.
The seat cushion may be provided with a child booster seat which allows a correct seating attitude for small children when using conventional seat belts. The booster seat may be folded down to allow operation as a normal seat, and it may be provided with built-in anti-submarine capability to help prevent a small child from slipping out of the seat under the seat belt. The term "anti-submarine capability" is used to denote a seat cushion which is profiled so as to have a raised portion at a point close to the user's knees when the user is sitting back in the seat. Such anti-submarine capability is not possible using a separate booster seat placed on a standard seat cushion.
The seat cushion may be provided with an integral baby seat, thereby removing the requirement for safely mounting a baby seat on a standard seat cushion. The potentially -dangerous practice of fixing the baby seat by means of standard seatbelts is eliminated. If the vehicle is provided with one or more air bags to protect passengers in a collision, it is preferred for safety reasons that the operation of the air bag is disabled when the air bag is associated with a baby seat. This may be achieved by providing the baby seat with an integral switch or other means which prevents operation of the air bag.
The seat cushion may provided with a motor to facilitate tilt adjustment or seat height adjustment. The motorised seat may also be used to tilt the side or rear of the cushion upwards to help the egress or ingress of elderly or disabled passengers.
Additionally or alternatively the seat cushion may be provided with an integral heating element for cold weather. Optionally the seat may also include operating switches for adjusting the seat temperature.
Electrical connections for seat motors and/or heating elements may be made automatically with the vehicle wiring loom when the seat cushion is correctly mounted in the vehicle. The connection may be made, for example by means of spring loaded contacts associated with the mounting means.
The removable seat cushions may also provide additional load flexibility with the rear seat folded. The rear seat cushions may be removed to allow either increased load space where the cushion has been removed, or by allowing the seat back to be folded flat into the space normally occupied by the seat cushion.
The invention will now be further described, by way of example, with reference to the following drawings in which: Figure 1 is a view of a vehicle rear seat bench having a seat cushion mounting system in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a view of a child booster seat for use with the invention; and Figure 3 is a baby seat for use with the invention.
Figure 1 shows a rear seat bench which comprises three seat cushions 2 and a split rear seatback 4a, 4b. Each seat 2 has on its underside second mounting means (not shown) which are interengageable with first mounting means (not shown) in the vehicle floor 6. The mounting means may comprise any suitable latching. mechanism, for example a mechanism similar to that used for releasably fastening a vehicle seatbelt. Alternatively the seat cushion 2 may mounted so as to allow tilting of the seat cushion 2 relative to the seatback 4a. Each seat cushion 2 may therefore readily be removed to allow extra storage space, or to allow replacement by a different design of seat cushion.
The seat cushion 2a shown in Figure 2 is provided with a child booster seat 8, which may optionally be profiled to provide anti-submarine capability. When the child booster seat 8 is not required, it may be folded down to allow the seat 2a to function as a normal seat.
The seat cushion 2b shown in Figure 3 is provided with an integral baby seat 10 so that the baby seat 10 may be securely mounted in the vehicle without the need for the use of seatbelts for mounting the baby seat.
The seat cushions described above, and others, may be specified by a purchaser to be mounted in preferred locations in the vehicle so that the purchaser gets exactly the seat layout he prefers. For example the purchaser could specify the rear bench with one normal seat for an adult or eldest child, one booster seat for a middle child, and a baby seat for the youngest child. A similar car for an elderly couple could be specified with the driver's seat having a heating element and a passenger seat which has a heating element and also a motor to allow easy ingress/egress for the passenger.
The invention is not limited to the above embodiments, and it will be understood that many variations are possible which fall within the scope of the invention once the invention is understood.
