Abstract
Two electrical distribution arrangements 10, 11, such as distribution boards or consumer units, are interconnected by means of a flexible electrical conductor 16 extending between a bus bar 14 of the first arrangement 10 and the input side of a main switch or circuit breaker 13 of the second arrangement 11. The bus bar 14 in arrangement 10 distributes power from the output side of the main switch or circuit breaker 13 therein and outgoer devices 15, such as fuses or circuit breakers. A braided copper conductor 16 may have one end welded to provide a D-shaped cross section which is located under an upset (17, Figs. 3-8) in bus bar 14 and secured by crimping. Conductor 16 may alternatively be secured to bus bar 14 by spot welding.
Description
IMPROVEMENTS IN AND RELATING TO ELECTRICAL DISTRIBUTION
The invention relates to electrical distribution and more particularly to methods and apparatus for electrically interconnecting two or more electrical distribution arrangements, such as distribution boards or consumer units.
The present conventional manner of interconnecting electrical distribution arrangements comprises locating a rigid electrically conductive link between one of the outgoer devices of one arrangement and the incomer device of another. Hence one or more of the outgoer devices of said one arrangement cannot be utilised for its intended purpose.
It is an object of the invention to overcome this disadvantage.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a method of electrically interconnecting at least two electrical distribution arrangements comprising connecting a flexible electrical conductor means between a bus bar of a first electrical distribution arrangement to an incomer device of at least one second electrical distribution arrangement.
The flexible electrical conductor means may be connected to the bus bar by crimping. The bus bars may be formed with at least one upset portion beneath which the end of the flexible electrical conductor means is located and crimped.
Preferably the flexible electrical conductor means comprises at least one flexible braid the or each said end of which is welded into a 'D'shape transverse cross-section for locating beneath the upset portion.
According to a further aspect of the invention there is provided a bus bar for an electrical distribution arrangement which is formed with at least one upset portion, an end of a flexible electrical conductor being crimped beneath the or each upset portion.
The or each electrical conductor may comprise a flexible braid with said end welded into a 'D'-shape transverse cross-section.
According to a further aspect of the invention there is provided an electrical distribution arrangement including a bus bar as defined in the next preceeding two paragraphs and such arrangement may comprise a distribution board or a consumer unit.
The foregoing and further features of the invention may be more readily understood from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a schematic representation of two electrical distribution arrangements interconnected in accordance with the prior art;
Fig. 2 is a schematic representation similar to
Fig. 1 but with interconnection provided in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of a bus bar;
Fig. 4 is a side elevational view of the bus bar portion Fig. 3
Fig. 5 is a perspective view similar to Fig. 3 but with a flexible conductor attached thereto;
Fig. 6 is a side elevational view of the arrangement of Fig. 5;;
Fig. 7 is a schematic side elevational view of a crimping operation, and
Fig. 8 is a transverse sectional view in the direction of arrow X in Fig. 7.
Referring now firstly to Fig. 1 there is shown a prior art arrangement in which a first electrical distribution arrangement 10 is connected to a second similar arrangement 11 by a conventional rigid conductive link 12.
Each of arrangements 10 and 11 comprise an incomer device 13, such as a switch or circuit breaker, connected on its live side via a bus bar 14 to three outgoer devices 15, such as a fuse or circuit breaker.
Interconnection of arrangements 10 and 11 is provided by the link 12 which is attached to one of the outgoer devices 15 of arrangement 10 and to the live input terminal of incomer device 13 of arrangement 11. Hence one of the outgoer devices 15 of arrangement 10 cannot be utilised for connection to a circuit to be protected.
Referring now to Fig. 2 there is shown a similar schematic to that of Fig. 1 but with arrangements 10 and 11 interconnected according to an embodiment of the invention.
The configuration of interconnection of arrangements 10 and 11 is via a flexible electrical conductor 16 which has one end crimped directly to bus bar 1 of arrangement 10 and its other end connected to the live input terminal of arrangement 11. Hence with this configuration all of the outgoer devices 15 of arrangement 10 can be utilised for protecting circuits to be supplied. Furthermore, additional conductors could be connected from bus bar 14 of arrangement 10 to further additional electrical distribution arrangements (not shown).
Figs. 3 and 4 show enlarged views of a portion of bus bar 14 with an upset 17 formed therein, for example by stamping. Further upsets 17 could be formed in bus bar 14, according to the number of interconnections required.
Figs. 5 and 6 show views similar to Figs. 3 and 4 but with conductor 16 located beneath upset 17. The conductor comprises a braided member, preferably of copper, with its end welded to provide a 'D' shaped transverse cross-section to locate more easily beneath upset 17.
Fig. 7 shows schematically, the conductor 16 being crimped to bus bar 14 by a tool 18 which applies pressure to upset 17 to deform cable 16 into the aperture 19 beneath upset 17 and form a secure mechanical and electrical connection to bus bar 14 as shown in Fig. 8.
The arrangements 10 and 11 could be electrical distribution boards or consumer units.
Although the preferred manner of connection of conductor 16 to bus bar 14 is crimping as detailed above, such connection could take other forms, for example by spot welding.
