Abstract
A foldable container for the transport of animals or goods or for storage comprises end panels 30 which may be folded downwardly over a bottom 20 and side panels 25 hinged to the bottom 20 and to a top 10 and having hinge lines allowing them to be folded double over the bottom 20.
Description
Foldaway Container
This invention relates to a foldaway container for the transport of animals, goods or storage.
At present, a container consists of a rigid box which has an opening at one end for access.
The containers come in various sizes from small to 40ft long ships containers, they all have one problem, when not in use, they are an expensive waste of space.
A fine example of this, is a- cat- basket, it will spend 99% of its life empty,- taking up room and a problem to store. The same problem exists for the 40ft long ships container.
According to the present invention, there is provided a foldaway container, comprising of a box like container with a rigid roof and rigid bottom, the two end panels are hinged to the bottom of the container and fold inward, they are secured to the top of the container with releasable catchment or bolted.
One of the end panels incorporate a door or doors for access to the container
The two side panels are both hinged at top and bottom of container and are both hinged in the middle of the side panels
When the end panels are released from the top of the container, and are both lowered inward to the bottom of container, this allows the two hinged side panels to pivot inward, and allows the roof to collapse to the bottom of the container, and in so doing reduces the size of the container.
The space that one container occupied normally, would then accomodate ten or twelve container.
Foldaway Container
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by-way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing , in which drawings 1 to 8 show a foldaway cat basket used as an example.
Figure 1 shows the container in a foldaway mode, the dotted lines indicate the positions of side panels 25 and end panel 30 within the foldaway container, in this mode the top 10 and bottom 20 are clipped together.

Foldaway Container
Referring to the drawing, the container comprises of an oblong box with a rigid top 10 and a rigid bottom 20, two side panels 25 and two end panels30 one of which has a door or dobrs in.
In order to foldaway the container, the two side panels 25 must be hinged at the top 10 and bottom 20 of the container and in the middle of the side panels 25. The two end panels 30 are both hinged at the bottom 20 of container, and both fold inward to lay flat in-the bottom 20 of container, and in so doing take away the rigidity from the side panels 25 and the top 10.
The side panels 25 are designed to only fold inward, and as the two side panels 25 fold, the top10 is lowered to the bottom 20, and the side panels 25 and end panels 30 are accommodated completely within the top 10 and bottom 20 of container, these can then be clipped together.
To erect container one has to simply raise the-top 10 and this automatically brings the two side panels 25 to an erect position, when the end panels 30 are in araised position and lock into the top 10, the side panels 25 will become rigid and reform the container.
When the container is in the foldaway mode, the top 10 and bottom 20 are clipped together.
Claims (4)
- Foldaway ContainerClaims The foldaway container comprising an oblong box in various sizes with a door or doors in one end for access to container The end panels are adapted to fold inward, by being hinged at the bottom of the container. The two side panels are adapted to fold inward from the top and bottom of the container This is achieved by way of hinging the side panels at the top and bottom and in the middle. When the container is in the foldaway mode, the side and end panels are completely accommodated within the top and bottom compartments, this forms a flat container and as such occupies a fraction of the space of a standard container and as such, is easy to store.
- 2 The foldaway container as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the two end panels are hinged to the bottom of container and when erect form a rigid infill between top, bottom and sides.
- 3 The foldaway container as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the two side panels are so designed as to fold inward and are restricted in movement to go no further than 90 degrees to the bottom of container, and in the erect position form a rigid construction.
- 4 The foldaway container as claimed in claim 1, claim 2 or claim 3, wherein the edge of the end panels and the edge of the side panels meet are designed to interlock, thus preventing any movement of the side and end panels and creating a rigid construction 5 A foldaway container substantially as described herein with a reference to figures 1 to 12 and 14 to 17.
