Abstract

The device is a convenient tool for pulling posts out of the ground. The three main components are lever 1, pedestal 2 and stirrup 4. The equipment may be operated by one person and can be carried into locations that might be inaccessible to larger equipment. Downward effort on the handle of the lever 1 will produce an upward force at the load end of lever 1. The stirrup 4 is fixed to the load end of lever 1 in such a manner that it can pivot. When the handle of lever 1 is raised the stirrup 4 will relax and drop to a lower position about the post 5. Repeated applications of downward effort on the lever handle 1 will extract the post 5 in small increments.

Description

DEVICE FOR WITHDRAWING POSTS This device relates to a portable tool for withdrawing posts out of the ground.

Posts are used for many different purposes, such as supporting newly planted - trees.

They may support fencing, or form a pergola, or may even be a sign post.

When such posts require replacement or become redundant, their removal is no easy matter.

The customary way of removal has been to use chains and tractors; or even destructive implements such as crow bars.

This device can be carried and put to use by one single operator, it causes minimal damage , hence posts in good condition may be reused.

According to the present invention there is provided a simple lever mounted on a fulcrum.

The fulcrum is an integral part of a vertical pedestal. Due to mechanical advantage, downward effort at the lever handle produces a considerably increased lifting force at the load end of the lever.

A stirrup engaging with the post to be extracted has an extension arm which is hinge mounted to the load end of the lever, this togggle action further enhances the lifting force.

A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which figure 1 shows in perspective, the device located in it's working position, engaged to a post, (7) and ready for operation.

Application of force to lever, (1) in the direction of arrow 'A' produces a lifting force on post, (7) in the direction of arrow 'B'.

Figure 2 shows an exploded view of the components which make up the device.

Lever, (1) is hinged to pedestal, (2) by means of fulcrum bolt, (3). Stirrup assembly, (4) is entered into the bearing hole at lever end, (5) and secured by release pin, (6).

The pivoting action of the Stirrup assembly, (4) is such that a range of post sizes and thicknesses can be lifted.

Claims (5)

1. A device for withdrawing posts, comprising a lever being mounted on a pedestal in which the fulcrum is located. A stirrup which can pivot has jaws which engage with the post.

2. A device for withdrawing posts as claimed in claim 1 wherein the load end of the lever is provided with a bearing hole.

3. A device for withdrawing posts as claimed in claim 1 and claim 2 wherein a stirrup assembly is inserted in the lever end , the fixing being such that the stirrup is able to pivot.

4. A device for withdrawing posts as claimed in claim 1, 2 and 3 wherein a pull out pin enables the stirrup assembly to be quickly detached.
