Abstract
A sliding punch/nail holder has a tube 1 in which a rod 2 can slide. A nail 6 can be accomodated in one end of the tube adjacent one end of the rod and the other end of the rod and the other end of the rod having an enlarged head 3 may be struck by a hammer to drive the nail into a workpiece 8. A metal stop 4 attached to the rod is slidable in a slot 5 of the tube. The rod may be magnetised in order to aid the holding of a nail. An additional tube (10, Fig 5) may be slidable between the rod and outer tube 1 with a spring (11, Fig 5), to keep it pushed forward, in order to accomodate differing sized nail heads.
Description
SLIDING PUNCH/NAIL BOLDER
This invention relates to a tool used for fixing materials by nails.
The accuracy and ease of fixing materials by nails is considerably enhanced by tools which enable the operative to hold the nail in position and at the same time apply the hammer blow some way away from the head of the nail. For example, in awkward corners, next to materials which may be damaged by the hammer head, and in positions where the width of the hammer head prevents access.
Also, some fixing operations in awkward corners require the operative to hold the nail, put pressure on the nail (to make contact with the background through the materials to be fixed) and at the same time hold a nail punch so that the blow from the hammer head is away from the nail head.
This invention enables the operative to do all three without difficulty.
This sliding punch/nail holder consists of a tube in which slides a rod with a metal stop to prevent the rod from separating from the tube. One end of the rod is widened to take the hammer blow.
The sliding punch/nail holder can be produced in varying lengths and rod widths to suit various requirements. It can be manufactured to give a variable internal diameter to the tube to suit different nail head sizes (henceforth referred to as "multi size11).
The rod can be magnetised to enable the nail to be held in the tube when upended or vertical thus preventing the nail from slipping out.
Various materials can be employed in the manufacture of this invention according to the required life.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of examples with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows the sliding punch/nail holder in elevation.
Figure 2 shows the sliding punch/nail holder in section.
Figure 3 shows the nail placed in position.
Figure 4 shows the nail forced through the material to be fixed
and into the background.
Figure 5 shows the multi-size punch with variable diameter tube
for different nail head sizes. This slot in the inner
tube has been left out for purposes of clarity.
Figure 6 shows the multi-size punch with large nail placed in
position
Figure 7 shows the multi-size punch with small nail placed in
position.
The punch comprises a tube 1 with slot 5 in the side. Into the tube is placed a metal rod 2 with a widened head 3 which takes the hammer blow. The tube and rod are connected through the slot by a metal stop 4 which prevents the rod separating from the tube (as figures 1 and 2). The rod can slide up and down the tube.
The nail 6 is inserted into the tube pushing the rodback as necessary. The nail will stay in place due to the magnetism in the rod. The operative can now hold the tube and apply a hammer blow to the end 3 of the rod which will drive the nail into the material to be fixed (as figures 3 and 4). As there is no mechanical connection between the rod and tube, no percv2fsve force is transferred to the operative's hand, thereby increasi-- the accuracy of the operation. The nail can also be driven in at any desired angle.
In order to allow the fixing of nails with large or small heads a double tube is used as in figure 5. The outer tube 9 has a flanged end, and inside is the inner tube 10 with a coil spring 11 at one end. Both tubes are slotted to accommodate the metal stop 4 which prevents the rod being separated from the tube
A small headed nail 13 will slide inside the inner tube and make contact with the rod as previously described (see figure 7).
A large headed nail 12 will push back the inner tube 10 and compress the spring 11 which is held back by a catch 14, and released after use (as figure 6).
Claims (4)
1. A sliding punch/nail holder consisting of a rod with a
widened head, within a tube with a metal stop.
2. A sliding punch/nail holder as claimed in Claim 1 with the
rod magnetised.
