Abstract
A system designed for hafiz, qari, muslin students and students in general to assist in the process of learning, memorising, verifying, practicing, examining the art of learning by heart of the Quran Karim, the art of recitation of the Quran Karim under the various qirat techniques the art of calligraphic writing of the Quran Karim, research into the old manuscripts, study of Islam specifically. An optical disk may contain the ayats (verses) and suras (chapters) of the Quran Karim. The system displays the relevant ayats in a selected calligraphic style, with translation text, graphical wave image in selected qirat and pronounces through a speaker in an elected qirat. The user then repeats the ayats through a microphone, the system displays and rewards the response and plays back the attempt, a graphical image of the two recitations being displayed on the screen in waveform.
Description
Study System
A system designed to assist the memorising, learning of the Quran Xarim, qirat, calligraphic art,
Islamic studies, other subjects in general.
Muslims around the world have memorised the complete Quran Karim by heart in millions, they are known as Hafiz-ul-Quran. Every muslim learns by heart some degree of the Quran Karim. Some Hafiz-ul Quran, along with others specialise in the exquisite recitation of the Quran Karim, such a muslim known as a Qari and such recitation art as Qirat.
There is another art which specialises in the Quranic Calligraphy.
The method of memorising the Quran Karim and the art of Qirat has remained constant since the times of Khalfa Rashideen.
The present art of computer technology et al offers a means to assist and facilitate the task of
Hifiz-ul-Quran, Qirat and calligraphic Quranic writting.
The system, under various embodiments, will eliminate the necessity of having a skilled ustad (teacher, a rarity at the best of times) available at all times. The system will enable an ustad to accommodate more students in the same time. An Ustad, examiner will be able to test, check, compare, record the performance, monitor the progress of students automatically, accurately.
The system, under various embodiments, will enable students to move without disrupting the learning process, to learn, practice while on the move, in remote places without hinderance.
The systems may also incorporate the study of Hadith (quotations ,practices of the Prophet Muhammad Salalaho Alahi Wasalm (Peace be upon Him)) and Fiqh (jurisprudence) in a similar fashion.
Another difficulty for students of Islam, is the number, scale and volume of books covering Islam, the variety and dialect of the underlying languages is no less. Traditionally the books being written in
Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Urdu but today in English, French, German... are just as numerous and common.
The difficulties are just as many for the Ustads (teachers), selection of the teaching material, reflecting the students interest/ current affairs/ science and technology, research. Maintaining, upgrading the curriculum. Some difficulties are the same as under the study of any other subject.
Diversifying the subjects or options for study results in a many fold increase in the task for the teacher in terms of preparation and examination for any subject.
Another difficulty is in field of postgraduate (Ph.D, M. Phil ) research. Such research consists of the study of old manuscripts acquired(!) from around the world and currently resting in the vaults of
Glasgow University, Mitchell library and the like. The researchers have limited access and even then to sources local to their establishment. It is the intention of the present invention to open access to such manuscripts by scanning, photographing such manuscripts into the computers memory, backing storage for direct on line access, or through the supply of such on portable mediums such as cd-roms, It is a further intention to provide access to research that has already taken place in this field in a similar manner.
In a comprehensive embodiment of the system books and manuscripts may be digitised, held in image format, the system having extensive index means for searching, find and compare means for all the material held. The system having means of recording the options, subjects under taken by a particular student, and a means of generating an examination for the particular student and the study subjects undertaken. The examination may be on line, on a connected scratch/ drawing pad, recitation, multiple choice or by printing of an examination paper for use in the traditional method. An examination scheme may consist of combinations and permutations of such techniques.
It would be obvious to a person skilled in the art that the system described here can be used for the study of any subject.
The system, under various embodiments, will be enable students to move without disruption, to learn, practice while on the move, in remote places without hinderance.
An embodiment of the system consisting of an optical disk which contains the ayats (verses) and suras (chapters) of the Quran Karim letter for letter, dot for dot, stroke for stroke. Suras and Ayats stored in audio format, text format, image format and translation format in various languages, for displaying, searching by common words, themes. The audio and image formats in a plurality of formats reflecting the different arts of qirat, recitation and calligraphy. The user may choose any particular combination of formats for practice, examination.
In an embodiment of the system the user would select the suras, ayats to be learnt together with the qirat to be learnt. The system would display the relevant ayats in arabic in the selected calligraphic style, with the translation text in the selected language together with the graphical wave image in the selected qirat, and pronounce on the speaker in the elected qirat. The user would then repeat the ayats through the microphone, the system would display and record the users response, the system will play back the users attempt together with the selected qirat at the end. At the same time a graphical image of the two recitations being displayed on the screen, in wave form, for the user to view where he has differed from the selected qirat. The system displaying the best attempts from all attempts.
In an embodiment of the system the user will be able to adjust the operating parameters to customise the system operation. Customisation such as how many letters, words, ayats to practice with, number of repetitions before a playback, selection of different qirats, calligraphy and the like.
An embodiment of the system consisting of a single compact portable unit.
An embodiment of the system consisting of a drawing scratch pad interface for the user to practice the calligraphy of the ayats in different styles.
An embodiment of the system with direct on line, off line, batch mode, manual (cd-rom) access to books, manuscripts in text and image format for study or research.
The optical disk media offers such a high degree of storage capacity that a large number qirats and calligraphic styles may be incorporated on a single disk. However the user will be able to change, add such media for further offerings.
The optical disk storage is the most suited means but to a person skilled in the art it is not the only means, memory cards being an obvious candidate.
A plurality of the devices may be installed with one device acting as the master, control, file server system and the remaining devices acting as subordinate devices. The devices communicating with one another through interfaces (P..V) in a network. The physical requirements of the subordinate devices can be minimised by eliminating any redundant interfaces and functions. The interfaces and/or functions of the master device enhanced to ensure efficient and productive operation.
Such an interconnected system for use in a class room, campus environment.
An embodiment of the system may be built incorporating combinations and permutations of the embodiments and functions described.
To enable, disable, activate an interface or function, to program, adjust, enhance, modify, the software functions, the hardware functions, the operational characteristics for any of the interfaces for the system, the user will be able to:
set, reset the physical series of dip switches, set, reset, adjust the software switches via a
software control module, add or delete software switches, modify the function of software switches
by upgrading the control module specifically or the operating system software generally.
and thereby exercise complete control over the functioning and operating characteristics for the system.
The application of the system in a specific environment, embodiment may alter, increase or decrease the number, variety and combination of interfaces and software functions required but continue to operate and achieve the objective of an Islamic study system in particular and a study system in general as herein described and fall within the scope of the originality, inventiveness and intellectual property described herein.
