Description

A DISPLAY DEVICE The present invention relates to a display device for vehicles.
It is known to display indicia, such as advertising slogans or football club emblems, by printing the indicia on stickers which can be adhered to the windows of the vehicle, suitably the front and rear wind screens.
Known stickers are not intended nor suitable for frequent replacement because they leave traces of adhesive when they are removed, making the windows difficult to clean. Another problem with such display means is that they limit a driver's vision which could be hazardous.
From the point of view of actually displaying indicia, known display means are ineffective because, during the hours of darkness, the vehicle interior is not illuminated sufficiently to render the indicia visible.
The present invention overcomes these and other problems of known vehicle display devices.
According to the invention there is provided a vehicle display device mountable on a vehicle in association with a registration plate and comprising means for displaying indicia.
The phrase in association" is intended to embrace arrangements in which the device is mounted on or fitted to the registration plate by any means, or is mounted on the vehicle so that it lies substantially adjacent the registration plate.
The above phrase is also intended to embrace an embodiment in which the device actually comprises a registration plate.
Preferably, the device comprises a transparent face mountable over the registration plate. Such a face acts as a protective cover for the plate.
Conveniently, the device is mounted between the registration plate and the vehicle body. In a preferred embodiment the device is apertured so that it is mountable by the screw used to mount the registration plate to the vehicle.
In an alternative embodiment the device includes clip means by which it can be clipped onto the registration plate.
Preferably, the device is configured to be mountable in a first position or a second inverted position. Advantageously, different indicia are displayed in each of the positions. Such an arrangement allows a user to rapidly switch between different displays.
The holder is preferably transparent. Preferably, the means for displaying indicia comprises an indicia holder. Advantageously, the holder is in the form of a housing or sleeve into which indicia such as printed material can be inserted. Alternatively, the holder may comprise two faces normally biassed to engage one another so that printed material placed between the faces is held releasably.
The vehicle display device of the invention serves to locate the indicia to be displayed in a position of maximum visibility on the vehicle, affording advertising opportunities. The device overcomes problems of poor visibility in poor light conditions because its association with the vehicle registration plate ensures that it is illuminated by the lighting for the registration plate. Thus, in contrast to known display means, in poor light conditions the display device of the invention will stand out particularly well from the body of the vehicle.
Examples embodying the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying figures in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a display device of the invention in association with a vehicle registration plate; Figure 2 is a section through the device of Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a section through the device of Figure 1 in an inverted position.
As shown in Figures 1 and 2 a preferred display device of the invention comprises a body portion 2 mountable between a registration plate 3 and a vehicle body (not shown).
The device further comprises indicia display means 4 comprising a strip that is folded back on itself to form an open sleeve 4a which is connected to the body portion by a flange 5.
The body portion 2 is apertured 6 as shown so that it is mountable by the screws used to mount the registration plate 3 to the vehicle.
The device is preferably formed from a transparent plastic.
In use, the device is mounted between the registration plate and the vehicle and indicia to be displayed, such as printed matter, is inserted into the sleeve 4a.
The flange 5 prevents the printed matter from falling out of the sleeve 4a. Alternatively, the sides of the sleeve can be connected. The ends of the sleeve 4a can also include stop means to prevent the printed matter from falling out sideways.
The sides of the sleeves can be formed so that they are normally biassed to engage one another. In this arrangement printed matter is held between the sides of the sleeves.
In another embodiment the device includes clip means which allow it to be clipped onto a registration plate.
Whilst it is preferred that the indicia display means comprises an indicia holder to permit easy removable of the indicia, it may simply comprise a surface on which indicia can be applied, for example in the form of an adhesive sticker.
As the preferred device is transparent it can be inserted so that the face of the body portion 2 overlies the registration plate which is sandwiched between the display device 1 and the vehicle body. In the inverted position the indicia display means is below the registration plate as shown in Figure 3. Preferably, the indicia are different in the normal and inverted positions.
In a further embodiment two display means 4 are provided and, preferably arranged to display indicia above and below the registration plate.
The invention thus provides a simple yet effective indicia display in association with a vehicle registration plate.
