Abstract
A stillage, has a chassis 1 and a number of internal trays T1, T2 and T3. Into these trays there is placed products for transportation to another location. All the trays have to be movable to facilitate loading and unloading. Utilisation of space and conformance to Health and Safety legislation are of utmost importance. The use of simple mechanisms that provide secondary motion within the stillage allow both of these criteria to be successfully achieved. In the particular embodiment shown a linkage M1 connects trays T2 and T3 so that as T2 is raised to access T3, T3 also raises to present itself in a far more user friendly way to the operator. <IMAGE>
Description
THE DYNAMIC STILLAGE.
This invention relates to a Dynamic Stillage (from this point to be called the stillage).
Stillage is a general term applied to a wide variety of crates and boxes. Usually the purpose of such items in industry is to transport products from one place to another safely and without damage. The environmental and Health & BR<
Safety pressures on todays manufacturers has forced stillages to evolve to the point where they have to satisfy far more requirements than ever before. There are a few stillage design/manufacturers around that can satisfy the environmental issues but none, we feel, that can completely satisfy the Health & Safety legislation due to an inherent flaw in their design approach.
The design that is submitted herein considers the presentation of the products, in the stillage,to the operator and uses simple mechanisms to reduce the REACH,
TWIST and BENDING strains placed upon him/her. In this particular design the mechanism is no more than a straight linkage. It is, however, the concept of providing secondary motion within a stillage by use of some form of mechanism that is to be filed. In this context secondary motion is defined as; motion of a part of the stillage that is caused by a force being applied to it through a mechanism, within the stillage, and not directly to it by the operator of the stillage.
The concept of secondary motion will now be further described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, figures 1 fi 2.
Figure 1. shows the view of a stillage designed to carry automotive components between the component manufacturer and the car manufacturer. The stillages are durable, tend to be designed to suit a particular commodity and expected to last for a pre-defined period of time. In this figure the stillage is completely closed.
Figure 2. shows a view from direction A in figure 1 of the stillage in both its closed and open positions.
Referring to both figures, the stillage comprises a steel tubular chassis 1 which will vary in size and shape depending upon the particular products and processes it services. Within the chassis there are a number of trays (in this case 3) T1,T2 and T3 in which the product to be transported is located. These trays pivot around points
P1,P2 and P3. So tray T1 pivots about point P1, T2 about P2 and T3 about P3. Tray T1 is independent and is lifted upward by the operator until it locks in its open position.Tray T2 is also lifted up and locks into its upright position although this action also causes tray T3 to pivot about P3 (as the force is transmitted through the mechanism M1) and thereby raises the rearmost and lowest part of the stillage from an unreasonable to a reasonable position (in terms of the Health & Safety legislation governing manual handling).
Tray T3 will now be filled with product and, once full, tray
T2 is lowered thereby lowering tray T3 to its original position for transportation. Tray T2 is filled with product whereupon tray T1 is lowered and also filled. The stillage is then transported to its destination where an operator will empty it using the reverse sequence.
It must be stressed that the utilisation of the space available within the stillage is of prime importance as is the need to present the product in such a way as to minimise the occurrence of Repetitive Strain Injury due to excessive
REACH, TWIST and BENDING by the operators. The use of a mechanism that moves the most difficult to use parts of the stillage to a position that allows easy use, without direct input from the operator, is the concept being filed herein.
Claims (3)
1. A stillage comprising a chassis and inner trays one or more of which is connected to another, via some form of mechanism, to facilitate secondary motion.
2. A stillage as claimed in claim 1 wherein the concept of one part of the stillage moving, without directly being touched by an operator, facilitates safe and easy loading and unloading.
3. A stillage substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1 & 2 of the accompanying drawing.
