Description

COMPACT DISC APPARATUS This invention relates to compact disc apparatus.
Compact disc apparatus comprising a compact disc and a container for the compact disc are well known.
Since the introduction of compact disc apparatus, more and more types of compact discs have come on to the market from more and more firms. There is competition among the firms to have their compact disc apparatus bought by the general public, in preference to the compact disc apparatus of their competitors. It is an aim of the present invention to provide one means by which this may be done.
Accordingly, in one non-limiting embodiment of the present invention there is provided compact disc apparatus comprising a compact disc, a container for the compact disc, and a display card, the display card being of such a size that it is contained in the container, and the display card being such that it has a movable portion which moves when the container is opened to a position which is able to attract the attention of a person buying the compact disc apparatus.
The display card may be an advertising card, a promotional card, an instructional card, a greetings card, or a multi-purpose display card such for example as a combined promotional and instructional card.
Generally any suitable and appropriate type of display card may be provided in the compact disc apparatus. The compact disc may be any suitable and appropriate type of compact disc, including an audio compact disc, a video compact disc, a film compact disc and a video game compact disc. The container may be constructed in any suitable and appropriate manner including being constructed in the same manner as known compact disc containers.
The display card may be such that the movable portion automatically moves when the display card opens.
If desired, the display card may be such that the movable portion automatically moves when the container is opened, or when the compact disc is removed from the container.
The compact disc apparatus may be one in which the display card has a spring arrangement which causes the movable portion of the display card to move, the spring arrangement being separately constructed from the remainder of the display card whereby the spring arrangement is securable in position on the display card at a chosen one of a plurality of different locations and orientations, thereby to provide a manufacturer with a plurality of different directions in which the movable portion is moved by the spring arrangement.
The movable portion of the display card may form an inner portion of the display card when the display card is closed.
The spring arrangement may comprise an elastic band and a folded member, the folded member being secured to the remainder of the display card. The folded member may be secured to the remainder of the display card by an adhesive. The folded member is preferably made of card material but other materials may be employed.
Usually, the folded member will form a box when the display card is opened. Usually, the box will be a rectangular or square box.
Preferably, the elastic band is constructed at four spaced apart points such that the elastic band defines a rectangle or square when the display card is opened.
Such a construction provides a firm and robust spring arrangement.
Preferably, the movable portion comprises a pop up portion. The pop up portion may be such that it pops out to extend beyond the periphery of the display card.
The greetings card may include sound generating means and/or light generating means. Any suitable and appropriate type of sound generating means and/or light generating means may be employed. If desired, the sound generating means and/or the light generating means may be activated by movement of the spring arrangement, for example when the display card is opened. Other means may however be employed for activating the sound generating means and/or the light generating means.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of known compact disc apparatus in an open position; Figure 2 is a perspective view of first compact disc apparatus of the invention in an open condition; Figure 3 is a perspective view of the compact disc apparatus shown in Figure 2 in a closed condition; Figure 4 is a perspective view of second compact disc apparatus of the invention in an open condition; Figure 5 is a perspective view of third compact disc apparatus of the invention in an open condition; Figure 6 shows the compact disc apparatus of Figure 4 or Figure 5 in a closed condition; and Figure 7, 8, 9 and 10 show different types of display card for use in the compact disc apparatus of the present invention.
Referring to Figure 1 there is shown compact disc apparatus 2 comprising a compact disc 4 and a container 6 for the compact disc 4. The container 6 comprises a base 8 and a lid 10 which is hinged to one side of the base 8. The compact disc apparatus 2 as shown in Figure 1 is well known and the compact disc 4 can be an audio compact disc, a video compact disc or any other suitable and appropriate type of compact disc.
Figure 2 shows first compact disc apparatus 2 in accordance with the present invention. Similar parts as in Figure 1 have been given the same reference numerals for ease of comparison and understanding.
In Figure 2, the compact disc apparatus 2 has been additionally provided with a display card 12. The display card 12 has a base cover 14 and a lid cover 16.
The lid cover 16 is provided with a movable portion 18 which moves in the direction of the arrow 20 when the display card 12 is opened. The movable portion 18 is in the form of a pop up portion which actually pops out to extend beyond the periphery of the display card 12 as will be appreciated from Figure 2. The display card 12 also has movable portions in the form of pop up portions 22, 24, 26 which upstand from the base cover 14 when the display card 12 is opened.
The display card 12 is of such a size that it fits in the container 6 as shown. The display card 12 has two different types of movable portions, namely the pop up portion 18 which pops out beyond the periphery of the lid cover 16, and the pop up portions 22, 24, 26 which just upstand from the base cover 14. All of these pop up portions 18, 22, 24, 26 are able to attract the attention of a person buying the compact disc apparatus 2 as shown in Figure 2. The display card may be an advertising card, a promotional card, an instructional card, a greetings card, or a multi-purpose display card such for example as a promotional and instructional card. Thus the display card 12 is able to be used to enhance the appearance and/or the use of known compact disc apparatus 2 such for example as shown in Figure 1, whereby the compact disc apparatus 2 of the invention then becomes easier to see than known similar compact disc apparatus 2 but without the display card 12.
The display card 12 is such that the pop up portions 18, 22, 24, 26 automatically pop up when the display card 12 is opened. If the display card is fixed in position to the base 8 and the lid 10 of the compact disc apparatus 2, then the display card 12 will automatically open as the compact disc apparatus 2 is opened. The display card 12 is such that the pop up portion 18 moves inwardly and the pop up portions 22, 24, 26 fold flat as the display card 12 and/or the container 6 are closed. The closed condition of the compact disc apparatus is shown in Figure 3.
As shown in Figure 2, the display card 12 has a spring arrangement 28 which causes the pop up portion 18 to move. The spring arrangement 28 is separately constructed from the remainder of the display card 12.
The spring arrangement 28 is secured in position on the lid cover 16 of the display card 12 at the illustrated location.
It will be appreciated from Figure 2 that the pop up portion 18 of the display card 12 forms an inner portion of the display card 12 when the display card 12 is closed. The spring arrangement comprises an elastic band 30 and a folded member 32. The folded member 32 is secured to the base cover 14 by an ahesive. The folded member 32 is made of card material and it forms a box as shown in Figure 2 when the display card 12 is opened.
The illustrated box is rectangular but it may be square if desired. The elastic band 30 is connected at four spaced apart points such that the elastic band 30 defines a rectangle or square when the display card 12 is opened.
Figures 4 and 5 show respectively second and third compact disc apparatus of the present invention.
Similar parts as in previous Figures have been given the same reference numberals for ease of comparison and understanding.
Figure 4 is similar to Figure 2 but shows a different display card 12. The display card 12 shown in Figure 4 has pop up portions 34, 36, 38, 40.
The compact disc apparatus 2 of Figure 5 uses a display card 12 which is the same as that shown in Figure 4 but the display card 12 in Figure 5 is located in the lid cover 16 and upstands as shown in Figure 5 when the compact disc apparatus 2 is opened as shown.
Figure 6 shows the compact disc apparatus 2 of Figure 4 or Figure 5 in a closed condition.
Figures 7, 8, 9 and 10 show different types of display cards 12. The display cards 12 have various types of pop up portions 40 as shown. It will be particularly noted that the spring arrangement 28 is shown located in four different positions. An advantage of the spring arrangement 28 is that it enables manufacturers to locate the spring arrangement 28 in any chosen one of a plurality of different locations and orientations. The manufacturer is thus able to provide a movable portion such as the pop up portion 18 which is movable in a chosen one of a plurality of different directions.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiments of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings have been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the spring arrangement 18 may be used to activate sound generating means and/or light generating means.
