Abstract

A wheel nut 10 is double ended so that one end of it can be used to secure an alloy wheel to a wheel hub and the other end can be used when it is desired to secure a steel wheel to the same hub. The alloy wheel end 14 has a rotatable captive washer 16, whereas the steel wheel end has an integral mounting cone 18. <IMAGE>

Description

A WHEEL NUT This invention relates to wheel nuts, for use in securing the road wheels of a motor vehicle to the wheel hubs.
Typically, four such nuts are used on each wheel.
It is sometimes necessary to allow for both alloy wheels and steel wheels to be mounted alternately on the same wheel hub. Because of the nature of the different materials, two different fastening systems are required.
According to the present invention, there is provided a wheel nut for use in securing a wheel of a motor vehicle to a wheel hub, the nut having a threaded bore open only at both ends, a conical captive washer at one end and a spanner engaging surface with an across-flats dimension greater than the diameter of the conical washer.
The end of the nut with a conical captive washer is preferably adapted to secure an alloy wheel to a wheel hub.
The other end of the nut is preferably adapted to secure a steel wheel to a hub.
The spanner engaging surface may be a conventional hexagonal surface or any other desired form.
When an alloy wheel is to be mounted on the hub, the nut is used with its end with the conical captive washer facing the wheel. When it is desired to mount a steel wheel on the same hub, the nut is reversed and is screwed on so that its other end secures the wheel The across-flats dimension of he spanner engaging surface needs to be larger than the diameter of the washer, so that a torque-applying socket can be placed onto the spanner engaging surface from said one end.
The invention will now be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 'is an elevation of a wheel nut in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 shows the nut of Figure 1 being used to fasten an alloy wheel to a wheel hub; and Figure 3 shows the nut of Figure 1 being used to secure a steel wheel to a wheel hub.
The nut 10 shown in Figure 1 has a central spanner engaging surface 12 in the form of a conventional hexagon.
At one end, the nut has an axial extension 14, and on this extension a mounting cone or conical washer 16 is fitted, so that it can rotate freely on the extension 14.
At the other end, the nut has a conical shape 18. The nut also has a through bore indicated in dotted lines at 20.
The nut is used to secure a wheel 22 or 24 to a wheel hub 26 which has a threaded stud 28 projecting from it. The wheel 22 or 24 has holes 30 or 32 corresponding in number and position to the threaded studs 28.
To fasten a wheel to the hub the wheel is offered up to the hub so hat ,he holes 30 or 32 regi ter with the studs 23. Nuts O are nen screwed onto the studs 23 to hold the wheel in place Figure 2 shows an alloy wheel 22 which has a deep conical seat 34 surrounding the hole, and this seat 34 is arranged to co-operate with the mounting cone 16. When the nut 10 is tightened by applying a torque to its spanner engaging surface 12, the cone 16 engages in the seat 34 to provide proper securing of the wheel to the hub.
The steel wheel 24 shown in Figure 3 has a small conical seat surface 36'closely surrounding the stud 28, and the end 18 of the nut is shaped so as to engage with this seat surface so that when the nut is tightened, the steel wheel 24 is correctly secured to the hub 26.
It will be clear that the nut 10 in Figure 2 is the same nut as the nut 10 in Figure 3, with the nut simply being reversed depending on whether it is to be used to secure an alloy wheel 22 or a steel wheel 24 to the hub.
The invention thus makes it possible to have the option of securing either a steel wheel or an alloy wheel to the same hub, without needing to have separate nuts for the two different wheels.
