Abstract
The invention consists of covers for extruded window bar cross joints, figure 2, or end joints (figure 3), to create a Georgian or astragal efect in relief on windows and doors. The invention allows the window bar extrusions to be roughly cut and adhered to the glass; the covers are then placed over the roughly cut ends to create the Georgian effect. <IMAGE>
Description
ASTRAGAL JOINTS
TECHNICAL FIELD
This invention relates to astragal joints for double or single glazed windows and doors in the georgian style.
BACKGROUND
Georgian style windows are an established form of architecturally, c anging the appearance of a plain window to a georgian window. The current way to create a georgian effect on double glazed windows is to manufacture "Georgian Bars" and place them between the two panes of glass giving a georgian effect. Although this method works from a distance, up close or at an acute angle it quite obviously does not. Astragal joints and astragal/georgian extrusion adhered externally or internally to the glass would give a complete georgian effect in relief.
ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL FEATURES
The use of astragal joints would cut the time and cost of creating georgian windows. Currently to create this effect sections of georgian/astragal extrusion are cut to the correct lengths then individually mitred, this is extremely costly and time consuming and therefore is not commonly under taken. This new method would allow the astragal/georgian extrusion to be roughly cut and adhered to the glass then the astragal joints placed over the roughly cut ends thus creating a georgian effect.
EXAMPLE
The specific embodiment of the invention by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which;
FIG 1 Shows the window as a full assembly with the extrusion
and astragal joints in place.
FIG 2 Shows the main cross astragal joint.
FIG 3 Shows the end astragal joint.
Referring to the drawing the astragal joints will have a chamfer (1) on all edges around the astragal/georgian extrusion.
They will be assembled as shown in FIG 1 or multiples therefore to cover any size of window or door creating a georgian effect.
The extrusion and joints will be of any thickness to create a georgian/astragal effect on any depth of window frame see FIG 1 (2).
Wall thickness (3) to be of a thickness to reduce large sectional change between extrusion and astragal joints.
Angle (a) to be any angle to suit different manufacturers designs of window edge.
Claims (9)
1) Two or more joints of plastic or aluminium or any other material to create a georgian effect on any form of window door, skylight, dormer, single or double glazed, internally or externally.
2) the edges of the joints as in claim 1 where they close around the astragal/georgian extrusion is to have a chamfer of any angle or depth to create a gradual change of section and to create a thin edge seal to help stop water and dirt ingress.
The chamfer will also stop the creation of a sharp edge which will reduce the chance of the collection of dirt and make cleaning easier.
3) The astragal joints as in claims 1 and 2 will be adhered, clipped, screwed or riveted onto the extrusion in the correct position.
4) The astragal joints as in claims 1, 2 and 3 will be manufactured from any type of material be it plastic or aluminium to suit manufacturing costs.
5) The astragal joints as in claims 1, 2, 3 and 4 may change in shape to accommodate differences in the astragal/georgian extrusion.
Amendments to the claims have been tiled as follows 1 An extrusion adhered to the glazing material to create a Georgian effect. The extrusion being adhered by a tape concealed on the under side by two planer walls extendlng down to the glass. This will also reduce the effect of weathering on the tape edges.
2 An extrusion as in Claim 1 with an Astragal End Joint Fig 1 placed over to conceal any rough edge and the butt against window bead ledge creating a neat joint.
3 An extrusion as in Claim 1 with an Astragal End Joint slotted onto the end as in Fig 2 to mae a neat joint and butt against window bead ledge.
4 An extrusion as in Claim 1 with a male appendage so the Astragal End
Joint can be slotted over creating a neat joint and button against the window beadledge.
5 A window conversion kit comprising of length of the extrusion as in
Claim 1 and various types of astragal end joint as in claims 2, 3 and 4 to convert existing picture windows or windows with Georgian bars between the panes of glazing for more of an authentic Georgian window in relief.
6 The astragal end joint as in Claim 2 3 and 4 will be adhered, clipped, screwed or fixed by any means of mechanical jointing to the extrusion as in Claims 1 In the correct position.
7 The astragal end joint as in Claims 2, 3 and 4 will be produced from any material to suit manufacturing costs.
8 The cross section shape of the astragal end joint as in Claims 2, 3 and 4 may change to suit any changes in the extrusion, as in Claim 1.
9 The end joints as in Claims 2, 3 and 4, or extrusion as in Claim 1 is to have a chamfer of any depth or angle or a square edge where the astragal end joint meet the extrusion to make any sectional changes less apparent.
