Abstract
A ceiling trim (12) for use at a ceiling/partition junction comprises an elongate strip having in cross-section a sideways extending ledge (14) for supporting one edge of a ceiling tile and an upstanding end wall (11) for attaching the trim to a generally vertical wall, partition or support structure i.e. channel (1) thereof. The ledge includes an upstanding tongue (15) which in use locates behind an abutment surface of a tile-supporting grid member (18) and the end wall includes a sideways projecting cill (16) which extends above and is spaced from the ledge. The cill has a downwardly projecting tongue (17) which locates behind a second abutment surface of the aforesaid grid member. <IMAGE>
Description
CEILING TRIM
This invention relates to ceiling trim for supporting tiles or panels (hereinafter referred to simple as "tiles") of a suspended ceiling.
Ceiling tiles are conventionally supported in a grid of inverted "T" shaped runners and cross pieces which are joined together by simple mechanical connectors to define an integrated structure. The runners and cross pieces are conventionally extruded from steel or the like and include sideways extending ledges for supporting side edges of neighbouring tiles. Conventionally, the grid is supported by wall-to-floor partitions and is not normally mechanically connected to these partitions. One consequence of this is that the partitions do not define an integrated structure with the ceiling grid leading, particularly where glazed partitions are concerned, to less stable structures. Also, edge trim around the upper margins of conventional partitions is clearly visible, this being aesthetically unappealing.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved integrated ceiling trim which overcomes or at least alleviates the disadvantages discussed above.
According to the present invention in one aspect there is provided an integrated ceiling trim which comprises an elongate strip having in cross-section a sideways extending ledge for supporting one edge of a ceiling tile and an upstanding end wall for attaching the trim to a generally vertical wall, partition or support structure thereof, the ledge including an upstanding tongue which in use locates behind an abutment surface of a tile-supporting grid member and the end wall including a sideways projecting cill which extends above and is spaced from the ledge and includes a downwardly projecting tongue which locates behind a second abutment surface of the aforesaid grid member.
The strip is preferably extruded from aluminium or plastics. The end wall may locate within a guideway of a ceiling channel of a wall-to-ceiling partition. The guideway may be defined by lengthwise extending upwardly and downwardly extending spaced pieces of sidewalls of the ceiling channel. The ceiling channel may be suspended from a cross strut of a ceiling surface from which the ceiling is to be suspended.
In another aspect there is provided an integrated ceiling trim system which comprises a tile-supporting grid of runner and cross pieces supported at its edges by generally horizontal ledges of ceiling trim members, the ceiling trim members including generally vertical end walls by which the members can be connected to partition structure and the end walls and ledges including tongues which locate behind projections formed on runners and/or cross pieces of the grid.
The invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawing in which the sole Figure is a section taken through integrated ceiling trim apparatus in accordance with the invention, the left hand side of eh drawing showing a solid partition supported by the apparatus and the right hand side of the drawing showing a glazed partition supported by the apparatus.
The illustrated apparatus comprises an integrated ceiling channel 1 supported from a ceiling strut (not shown) by a threaded bolt 2 which screws into a complementary internally threaded fixing secured to the ceiling strut. The bolt 2 carries at its lower end a head 3 over which extension pieces 4 of the ceiling channel locate for support purposes. As will be seen from the right hand side of the drawing, the ceiling channel includes a removable glazing pocket insert 5 for use when glazed panels 6 are to be employed. These glazed panels extend into the glazing pocket and are retained in place by suitably shaped seals. As will be seen from the left hand side of the left hand side of the drawing, when a solid partition 7 is employed the insert 5 is removed and replaced with a tin track 8.
Each side of the ceiling channel is formed with a guideway 9 defined by spaced pieces 10 of the side walls of the ceiling channels. The guideway 9 receives and retains an end wall 11 of a ceiling trim 12 in accordance with the invention. The ceiling trim 12 is generally 11L" shaped in cross-section and includes a generally horizontal ledge 14 from the upper surface of which protrudes an upwardly projecting tongue 15. The end wall 11 is formed with a sideways projecting cill 16 which is formed at its free end with a downwardly extending tongue 17. The ledge 14 defines a support surface for the free ends of runners 18 of a ceiling support grid. Each runner 18 is formed with a shaped end including abutment surfaces 19 behind which the tongues 15, 17 locate. Thus the integrated ceiling trim 12 interconnects the ceiling channel to the grid to provide an integrated and relatively stable structure.
Preferably the ceiling trim comprises lengths of extruded aluminium; the ceiling channel and glazing pocket may also be similarly extruded.
It will be appreciated that the foregoing is merely exemplary of ceiling trim in accordance with the invention and that modifications can readily be made thereto without departing from the true scope of the invention.
Claims (8)

strip having in cross-section a sideways extending
ledge for supporting one edge of a ceiling tile and an
upstanding end wall for attaching the trim to a
generally vertical wall, partition or support
structure thereof, the ledge including an upstanding
tongue which in use locates behind an abutment surface
of a tile-supporting grid member and the end wall
including a sideways projecting cill which extends
above and is spaced from the ledge and includes a
downwardly projecting tongue which locates behind a
second abutment surface of the aforesaid grid member.
