Abstract
The adjustable handlebar and seat extension tube comprises a top tube 1 having a pivotal adjustment with respect to a bottom tube 2 is fixed into the pedal cycle frame. A pivotal bolt (5), nuts (3) and spacing washers (4) clamp top tube 1 and bottom tube 2 at the required angle. Thus the seat and handlebars of the pedal cycle can be adjusted in position independently of each other. <IMAGE>
Description
ADJUSTABLE HANDLEBAR AND SEAT EXTENSION TUBE
FOR A PEDAL CYCLE
The invention relates to an adjustable seat or handlebar extension tube.
Current handlebar and seat extension tubes for pedal cycles are well known parts of pedal cycles which allow the seat and handlebars to be fixed to the pedal cycle frame. They have the form of a straight tube which is bolted into the frame of a pedal cycle and rises out of the frame as an extension of either the seat tube or head tube, in the case of the handlebars.
The adjustment of seat or handlebar positions relative to each other is rather limited and this is the critical dimension for the comfortable use of the pedal cycle.
According to the present invention there is provided an adjustable extension tube comprising a top tube, a bottom tube and a means of securing the two tubes at the required angle by a clamping bolt at the centre of the pivotal axis. The full adjustment range to be from horizontal to horizontal through one hundred and eighty degrees.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which :
FIG 1 shows an isometric detail, full size, of the assembled tubes,
without pivotal bolt, in the ninety degree position,
FIG 2 iilustrates the proposed pivotal bolt clamping mechanism.
FiG 3 shows the whole working mechanism in side elevation.
Referring to the drawing FIG 1 the adjustable extension tube comprises a top tube 1 and a bottom tube 2.
In order to adjust the angle between 1 and 2, a pivotal bolt 5 as shown in FIG 2 with nuts 3 and spacing washers 4 grips the webs of top tube 1 to the webs of bottom tube 2.
Claims (7)
1. An adjustable handlebar and seat extension tube, for a pedal
cycle, comprising a top tube, a bottom tube and a pivotal centre
bolt, with spacing washers, to provide a means of adjustment to
the required angle and securing at the angle set.
2. An adjustable handlebar and seat extension tube as claimed in
claim 1 which allows the positions of the handlebars and seat to
be adjusted in position relative to each other.
3. An adjustable handlebar and seat extension tube as claimed in
claim 1 and claim 2 which aids the comfortable use of a pedal
cycle.
Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows 1. An adjustable handlebar and seat extension tube for a pedal cycle, comprising a top
tube, a bottom tube and a pivotal, double ended, centre bolt, with spacing washers,
to provide a means of adjustment to the required angle and securing at the angle set
by a symmetrical clamping force on the interlocking web mechanism from both sides
simultaneously along the pivotal axis.
2. An adjustable handlebar and seat extension tube as claimed in claim 1 which allows
the positions of the handlebars and seat to be adjusted in position relative to each other.
3. An adjustable handlebar and seat extension tube as claimed in claims 1 and 2. The
clamping mechanism relies on friction between the surfaces of the interlocking webs
to clamp top tube 1 to bottom tube 2 in the required position.
4. An adjustable handlebar and seat extension tube as claimed in claim 3 where the
multiple positioning of the tubes is therefore not limited other than by the 180 degree
horizontal to horizontal rotation range.
5. An adjustable handlebar and seat extension tube where the system of interlocking webs
of top tube 1 and bottom tube 2 which, because of their arrangement, number and
dimensions are to provide stability to the clamped mechanism, both laterally and
vertically, when the mechanism is in use.
6. An adjustable handlebar and seat extension tube as claimed in any previous claim
where the mechanism is intended to be used for either or both handlebar and seat
extension tube applications.
7. An adjustable handlebar and seat extension tube as claimed in any previous claim
where the dimensions of the interlocking webs are not restricted by the diameter of
the top or bottom tubes. Therefore the interlocking webs could be increased in
dimension to increase stability without reducing the adjustability of the mechanism.
