Teeth - cleaning appliances.-In a device for cleaning the teeth of the kind comprising a casing provided with a brush detachably connected to a spindle capable of being rotated through gearing by a hand - operated spring - controlled lever pivoted to the casing, the casing is of pear-shape or of circular conical form, tapering towards the end at which the brush is located. Fittings of various forms made of rubber or of textile or other material interchangeable with the brush may be provided. The casing comprises a conical part a, a cylindrical part b, and a sleeve c, flanged inwardly at the free end to form a bearing for the spindle d on which the brush e is screwed. The inner end of the spindle passes through a plate f secured in the cylindrical part of the casing by means of a closure plat'e h<1> secured to the casing b and fitted with an adjustable screw j engaging the end of the spindle d. The gearing comprises a boss k fixed to the spindle, and a toothed pinion k<1> free on the spindle and normally engaging the boss k through ratchet teeth and pressed against it by a spring m. Motion is imparted to the pinion k<1> by a crown wheel o mounted on a spindle p supported by a bracket q and fitted with a toothed pinion r which is engaged by a toothed sector s secured to the hand-lever t. The lever t is pivoted at u to the casing and carries a spring w the free end of which bears against the casing. To regulate the rotation of the spindle, it is fitted with a By-wheel x. The sleeve c is provided with a guard-plate y partly surrounding the brush. The spindle may be arranged to rotate in both directions, in which case the ratchet clutch and the fly-wheel may be dispensed with.
