Abstract

An integrated programmable system employing a remote sensing device 12 which surveils the road ahead of a moving automotive vehicle for obstacles, the signals from which it relays constantly to an electronic control unit 16 which as it assesses the signals, alerts the driver audibly and graphically via a panel (22 Fig 3) and simultaneously sends pulses to an actuator unit 18 which in effect, automatically restricts fuel supply 20 to the carburettor then initiates and progressingly operates all brakes 28, 17, 10, until the vehicle comes to a halt thus avoiding frontal contact with the obstacle or unless the driver overrides the automatic braking action by depressing a button (24) provided for the purpose. The system can be adapted for different driving environments, i.e. city or highway, by programming it, using relevant buttons on the panel. <IMAGE>

Description

INTEGRATED ROAD SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM This invention relates to an automotive vehicle road safety system.
Despite improved braking mechanisms on modem automotive vehicles, many accidents occur on roads nearly everyday. And this is not because the brakes always fail on the vehicles involved in such accidents. Often the accidents are caused because the brakes are applied too hard and too late, therefore having little chance to effectively stop the vehicles and prevent impact.
This is especially true of road accidents which occur in conditions of poor general visibility such as caused by thick fog, sleet and snow, darkness or human error.
According to this invention, there is provided the means for the automotive vehicle to surveil its forwards path while in motion, detect and measure its proximity to a preceding vehicle or other obstacle in its path, alert the driver of such, initiate and progressingly brake until it comes to a complete halt or the distance between itself and the obstacle is measured as safe, or the driver overrides the automatic action.
The invention will now be specifically described by reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows on the road, two automotive vehicles in motion, vehicle B following after vehicle A and vehicle B surveiling its forwards path with invisible beams 14 from a remote sensing device 12.
Figure 2 shows the main features of the invention and how it works, i.e. the remote sensor 12 in the front of the vehicle B sends out and receives constantly, invisible beams of any effective kind such as infra-red, electromagnetic, microwave, radar, radio waves laser, sonar, ultrasound, - 14, relaying signals from the road ahead 15 to an electronic control unit 16 which as it computes the values of the signals, alerts the driver audibly and visually 22 and at the same time, sends pulses 30 to an actuator unit 18. The actuator unit 18 in tum releases necessary amounts of pressure along the paths 17 to a fuel cutout unit 20, the braking mechanism 28 and brakes 10.
Figure 3 illustrrates vehicle B driving at a speed of nearly 70 mph behind vehicle A.
The invention being here described is on board vehicle B and while braking 10, alerts the driver audibly and visually 22 until the automatic action is cancelled by depressing a button 24 provided for the purpose or reduces speed to allow a safer distance or the system automatically brings the vehicle to a halt.
ItTTEGRATED POAD S"RVEILLAF!CE SVSTEtt Referring to the drawings, the invention comprises a remote sensing device 12 which surveils the road ahead of a vehicle and relays signals thereof to an electronic control unit 16 to which it is connected. The electronic control unit 16 alerts the driver and sends pulses to an actuator unitl8.
The actuator unit 18 produces and releases pressure to a fuel cutout 20 making it restrict fuel supply to the carburetor and measured quantities of the same to activate the brakes. The electronic control unit has a display panel with buttons provided for override and programming.
This enables the system to be adapted for different driving environments, i.e. city and highway.
