Abstract
A digital scale rule which may be either 150mm long or 300mm long, may have the calibrations and the numerals variable, or the calibrations static and the numerals variable. Solar energy cells or balleries (4) power microprocessors which determine the positions of the calibrations and numerals in a liquid crystal display (2). Touching numbers on the pressure pad (6) in a chosen sequence will activate the microprocessors to arrange the calibrations and the numerals in the liquid crystal display to the chosen scale. <IMAGE>
Description
DIGITAL SCALE RUZ This invention relates to a digital scale rule
Scale rules are used by architects, engineers, surveyors, students, designers and many others all over the world for the purpose of measuring drawings and maps.
Existing conventional scale rules are available in two main types e.g flat or triangular scale rules with embossed calibrations and numerals on both sides of their edges and are either I50mm or 300mm long.
According to the present invention the digital scale rule employs microprocessors and liquid crystal diplays (LCD's) which will be powered by either batteries or solar energy cells. This combination of elements will provide as many different scales as that of three to four separate conventional scale rules e.g it will be possible to select any scale from I:I to I: 5000 in the metric scale.
The digital scale rule would be manufactured in both 150mm and 300mm long in either metric or imperial calibrations and numerals.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be descibed by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which
Figure I shows an axonometric projection of a
I50mm long digital scale rule in which both the calibrations and the numerals are variable, see also the cross section.
Figure 2 shows an axonometric projection of part of the digital scale rule in which the calibrations are static and the numerals are variable, see also the cross section.
Keferring to the axoometric drawing and cross section in Figure I the calibrations I and the numerals IA on the LCD block are variable and will alter to the selected scale. The clear plastic cover 2 is to protect the LCD block. The injection moulded body is 3 and the solar energy cells or batteries location is 4.The numbers 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 are indicated by 5 and are printed on the pressure pad 6.By touching the numbers on the pressure pad in the correct sequence the required scale will be selected e.g touching the number I then the 0 then the 0 again the scale indicator 7 will confirm a selected scale of I:I04 at the same time both the calibrations and numerals on the LCD will indicate the chosen scale.
The letter 'C' also printed on the pressure pad and indicated by 8 when touched will cancel the last selected scale and 'ON' indicated by 9 is touched in order to power the microprocessors to ready the digital scale rule for use.Touching the 'ON' again shuts off the power in order to conserve energy.
The cross sections of the digital scale rule in both
Figures I and 2 shows IO as the internal space in the body of the digital scale rule for the necessary electronic elements required for it's operation.
Referring to the axonometric drawing of part of the digital scale rule and the cross section in Figure 2 the calibrations I are static i.e embossed or printed on the plastic edge of the digital sclae rule. The numerals indicated by IA are variable and will alter to the selected scale.
In all other aspects the digital scale rule shown in
Figure 2 embodies the same features as those specified in the drawing of the digital scale rule in Figure I.
Claims (6)

- 2.A digital scale rule as claimed in Claim I,wherein microprocessors are employed to activate the liquid crystal displays (LCD's).
- 3.A digital scale rule as claimed in Claim I or Claim 2, herein the liquid crystal displays (LCD's) contain a range of different scales.
- 4.A digital scale rule as claimed in Claim I or Claim 2, wherein solar energy cells or batteries power the microprocessors.
- 5.A digital scale rule as claimed in Claim I or Claim 2 or Claim 3 or Claim 4,wherein touching the numbers on the pressure pad will facilitate a range of different scales,in either the imperial or the metric system in separate digital scale rules.
- 6.A digital scale rule substantially as described herein, with reference to Figures I and 2 of the drawing.
